In August 2019, blazing fires across the Amazon rainforest brought forth uproar online with many social media users unknowingly re-sharing images that did not represent ongoing events but were taken years before. Misinformation is therefore introduced to the forefront of debate. In the time where environmental challenges are ascending political discussions, the Amazon fires attracted immense attention on the global platform. The extensive media coverage and public condemnation from environmental activists and agencies and foreign powers only helped to add fuel to the fire, so to say. But did the propagated online images and videos depict the truth on the ground? Why did the fires break out? What are the major causes, and how worse were the fires relative to previous years? How do wildfires start n a rain forest? By using the critical analysis methodology, this study intends to examine these perspectives of the Amazon misinformation.
