PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
Pride relates to opinion about us and others. We observe how parents exemplified by Mrs. Bennet have prejudice when it comes to who they want their children to marry. The society saw that Mr. Bangley was a rich man though in reality all these wealth were inherited from his father. Mr. Bennet was having internal pride that he acted not to make his wife know that he would want his daughter Elizabeth to be married by Mr. Bingley. He secretly visits Mr. Bingley and Elizabeth is given a job of trimming Mr. Bingley’s hat. Mr. Bennet was choosy he claimed that Elizabeth was better than all the girls despite Lydia being humored and Jane being handsome. Mrs. Bennet was not sure about her fears when she thought that Mr. Bangley is not settling in Netherlands as she thought just because she turned down an invitation to dinner. She could not imagine how fast he has become familiar in Hertfordshire and saw him as a man who fly from one place to another and not really settled in Netherlands as he should be. This is because Mr. Bangley had just travelled to London (Daxter 134).
Mr. Bangley’s daughters are seen to be mourning bases on false report that Mr. Bingley had gone to bring twelve ladies and seven gentlemen who they saw as great competitors and later come to hear that he only came with six ladies five being his sisters and one his cousin. Mr. Darcy , a friend to Mr. Bingley drew the attention of all people in the party people viewing him as fine, handsome, tall person, noble man and the ladies saw him even more handsome than Mr. Bingley but later the reality dawn on people that Darcy was proud, cannot be pleased and is unworthy when compared to Mr. Bingley, this was proved when Darcy danced only once with Mrs. Hurst and once with miss Bingley , declining being introduced to any other lady, walking about the room during the party hence being considered the proudest of all making people wishing that he should never come back there again (Farmer 129). In contrast, Mr. Bingley was lively, unreserved and would dance every dance. Mr. Bennet is expecting to hear negative views from his wife about the stranger but soon find that that the story that he hears is very different that the evening was most delightful and excellent, that Mr. Bingley admired Jane most dancing with her twice and thinking of her as the most beautiful. Jane admired Mr. Bingley and saw him as what a young man ought to be in terms of being sensible, lively and good humored. From Elizabeth’s comment we are made to know that Jane had love more stupid persons, she never saw a fault in the life of people and according to Jane all the world is good and agreeable. She is honestly blind to the nonsense of follies of others. In the discussion between miss Lucasses and Miss Bennet we find that Darcy don’t speak much unless he is speaking to his close friends, people say that he is filled with pride. They claim that a young man like Darcy, fortune, favourable and with a family should think high of him and has a right of being proud. The discussion between charlotte and Elizabeth about Jane’s reaction and admiration of Mr. Bingley reveal to us how the young girls honored love and marriage issues when they suggested that careful steps should be calculated before falling in love with somebody. They did not support the ways that Bingley and Jane were doing thinks through public meetings, dancing for this could not make Jane to have enough time to study his real characters. It is later being seen that Darcy is gaining interest in Elizabeth whom she had refused dancing and looked at her without any admiration and criticized her which we later see that Elizabeth is becoming an object of interest in the eyes of Darcy.
Jane having imagined the kindness of Mr. Bingley and her sisters is obliged to go when invited by Miss Bingley despite the rains. The compassion and love that Elizabeth shows to her sister Jane by walking long distance and all alone when she is despised and insulted by Miss Bingley mixed with pride and impertinence she claims that Elizabeth is scampering about the country just because her sister had a cold. Because of walking in the dirt she is seen to be untidy and blowsy. This was seen with her frequent demand that her husband should visit Mr (Janet 127). Bingley and this had an aim of making one of her daughters being married to a rich man. When Jane went to Netherlands and felt ill because of being rained on her mother feels that she is very well there as long as she stays there though her father and her sister Elizabeth were worried and anxious about what would happen to her. Full of desire to see her daughter Jane being married in Netherlands, Mrs. Bennet would not see her health issue alarming and worth visiting her daughter despite the requests by letter from her younger daughters. She was not wishing that Jane would recover immediately.
Later Mr. Collins who was a clergy man visits Bennets family in Longbourn. He settles to choose a wife from Bennet sisters and Jane is again singled out. Because Jane had a romantic affair with Mr. Bangley, Mr. Collins is directed to Elizabeth of which she refuses. Elizabeth is then attracted to Wickham, a military officer who after realizing that his relatives have been mistreated by Darcy deepens the hate that Elizabeth have for Darcy. Despite the much expectation of Jane and her parents that after marriage that they will live in Netherlands, Mr. Bingley moves to live in London. From Elizabeth’s visit to Rosing Park through the invitation of Mr. Collins and Charlotte and obtains the information that the intention of Mr. Bingley marrying her sister, Jane faced objections from Darcy who also pretends that he loves Elizabeth to the point of requesting for a hand in marriage. We find out that Mr. Darcy played a great role in disgracing Wickham and ensuring that Jane and Mr. Bingley’s happiness is destroyed yet Darcy revealed that Mr. Bingley had no love for Jane and was just after the Bennets’s propriety. This makes Elizabeth to realize her prejudice and misjudgment towards Darcy. She later start developing interest towards Darcy which is short lived after she realize that Lydia and Wickham are marrying and Darcy was responsible for negotiating their marriage for monetary payment though they later settle down and marry.
In conclusion the book illustrates people having pride which makes them make wrong decisions. They are also having prejudice which illustrated when people makes observation and interpret them wrongly leading to making wrong choices and decisions (Austen,J)
