Processes for engaging citizens and stakeholders
The concept of governance in sustainable development is always controversial and subject to contentious debates among individuals. However, in this module, governance in sustainable development goes beyond the scope of the local or federal government. Bingham (2006) suggests that sustainable development should be perceived in the prism of the role that all the essential stakeholders in the society plays. In that regard, the group believes it believes that collectivity, especially collective leadership, is instrumental in attaining sustainable development in society. The individuals, NGOs, local leadership, and everyone in the community play a vital role in achieving sustainable development. Though local governments or the federal government could be instrumental in formulating policies and laws essential for the realization of sustainable development, it needs individual and collective responsibility for these policies and laws to be effective. Thus, collective governance towards sustainable development is essential as it acts as a platform for mutual responsibility towards the realization of sustainable communities.
