PROPOSAL ARGUMENT
Also called a “proposal argument,” this assignment asks students to suggest a solution to a problem. This form of deliberative rhetoric addresses the question, “what are we going to do?” A successful proposal argument demonstrates not only that the problem is significant enough to merit attention, but that the proposed solution is the best one. Any topics or sources covered in class are off limits. It is highly encouraged that students develop their critical thinking skills by focusing only on the topic they analyze. However, students are permitted to use additional sources if they feel them necessary to support their ideas. If a student uses more than one, the sources must be cleared with the instructor. All sources, including the primary text being analyzed, must be cited in MLA format – both in text and on the works cited page. Formatting requirements: Ø 1300-1500 Words, Double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 font, 1-inch margins, titled, MLA heading and page numbers. Writing requirements: Students should use varied sentence structure and clear writing; choose words and style carefully. Proper spelling, capitalization, and punctuation are essential. Students should also heed the following writing advice: • Limit use of contractions • Avoid vague, general statements • Do not use slang, clichés, or jargon • Eliminate redundancy and wordiness • Use present tense and write actively when possible • Avoid vague pronoun usage and misplaced modifiers • Limited first person and no second person point of view
