Education is key in today’s society. Since I have decided that I want to be a teacher, I have had to do numerous service hours in a public school in Leon county. Over the past few weeks, I have been to two different schools with two very different demographics. I was upset to see that the school that had a predominant minority population was more “run down” than the other. The paint was chipped in these schools’ hallways, books were falling apart, and students just weren’t supported by the faculty. However, in the school with a predominantly white population, I saw new books, freshly waxed floors, and staff who genuinely cared about the students. If education determines success, then how can we expect children to do their best if we don’t even give them the best education we can. All school needs better and equal funding.

Lack of funding in schools includes the inability to invest in all the necessary resources for students. Where the state administration allows for privatization and chartered schools to take over the provision of education, minority, and poor households will find it challenging to send their children to school. Chartered schools do not entirely focus on the education of students but are concerned about profit achievement.

Equality is one of the primary values of the American people as they consider all men that they were created equal. Nevertheless, the reality is that in the US, some individuals fail to treat all its citizens equally. The idea of equality is, however, felt by the majority of the American population. All individuals need to equal opportunities, and it forms the concept of the American dream. In contemporary America, the majority of people have realized that the American Dream is not true, as there are considerable inequalities among American citizens. In most cases, individuals coming from privileged backgrounds will ultimately possess an easier time as they move up the world. Nevertheless, the concept of equality forms a significant part of the United States culture. Equality is demonstrated in the classroom, and Americans believe that all students need to experience equal treatment from the teachers as well as the government at large.

Competition is a key-value among Americans, especially in the education sector. In schools, students usually work hard to attain the best grades. The competition in schools should provide a fairground for all students to ensure that they gain success in their academics. The performance of individuals requires a better learning environment staring from the physical structures such as classrooms, learning materials, and the teachers. There should be no distinction between the minority groups and the popular white population.

Inequality in the funding of local schools is a severe concern across the country as the existing system allows significant disparities to occur, where the high poverty institutions, in most cases, receive fewer dollars.

Considering the value of progress and change, the American culture beliefs in changing the self and the country as a whole. In the education sector, education is considered a change factor that impacts the life of a person and the entire society. Equal funding of schools represents equal empowerment and giving students equal opportunities to learn and shape their future. The success of students determines the future of the nation at large.
