Questions about the source of creativity

A friend of a friend recently got a job in a company that makes tiny homes in the country, which is a way of living that many people are getting to enjoy. Although he was a very creative and practical person with his hands, getting into the new business has brought out new creativity that nobody anticipated. He proved that apart from using his hands in a practical manner, he could visualize spaces that he could use for different purposes faster than anybody else. Even those that trained him in work have said that he is talented and can see what many people could never.

Questions about the source of creativity

  1. What is creativity to you?

To me, creativity is a process through which one takes their knowledge and circumstances and uses these to get what they require. Most of the time, the ideas are not out-of-the-box while thinking and they appear to be normal. It is only after implementation that one sees that they got what they wanted without going out of budget or using too much space.

  1. Do you consider yourself to be creative? Why?

Indeed, I consider myself to be a creative person because it is a requirement in the industry I work in. Building tiny homes need one to understand that space is an issue, and so is the cost. For this reason, the client must get what they need at their price and in a limited space. Although we are trained to think creatively, I also find that talking extensively with the clients and understanding them as well as doing research on their needs can make it easier for one to be creative.

  1. Do you ever critique your work? Elaborate

I do critique my own work, although I am never too harsh on myself. For me, anything I do has to be aesthetically appealing, in the price range of the client and able to fit in their home. I know these are the aspects that I can truly perfect and trying to do the same for the others could result in what they do not want. I believe perfectionism is a mirage, although I have a standard that I could never go below.

  1. How do you manage to stay unique and original in your work?

One of the reasons I have managed to stay unique in my work is that I am a heavy researcher. The history of tiny homes is very extensive, and there are still people doing a lot of important and beneficial things out there today. By studying and understanding the concepts behind these activities, I have become able to view problems differently. For instance, after understanding the Japanese knots, I do not have to think about nails and screws, especially where a strong structure is wanted temporarily.

  1. What is your life moved you into being an interior designer for tiny homes?

I had never thought about tiny homes until I knew well about tiny homes. Even then, I still thought of them as something that others, and not necessarily me, would do. However, after working for a large corporation, I decided, together with my friend, to start a business. My friend was interested in real estate, and I loved interior design. Although the real-estate slump was still fresh in the minds of many Americans, we decided to do that we would build houses only that they would be economical and just as beautiful as others. That is how I started living my dream.

  1. Do you get bored or frustrated with your work?

Yes, there are many aspects of my work that are frustrating. One of them is that the concept is generally new and even those who want to try it do it because of the costs but are not ready. As such, they could have many complaints and demands that are a nightmare to implement. Similarly, some suppliers might be unreliable and not only cause headaches but also slows down the progress of the job.

  1. What do you do to remain motivated and inspired at work?

I always try to learn and understand the different views at all times. I can read series books, watch documentaries, talk to experts and even watch guiding videos online of different approaches for different problems. Sometimes I find a possible solution to a certain notorious problem, and this goes on to inspire me and keep me motivated for a long time. Each job is also different and achieving it helps me to further believe in myself and look forward to the next challenge. I also work with open minded people including my partner which is good fuel for creativity and inspiration.

  1. How would you like to be remembered?

I would love to be remembered as the interior designer who thought critically and came up with different solutions to common problems. I think that the endeavor of tiny houses itself is noble as it stops people from drowning in debt and also protects the environment from pollution. However, solutions such as fuel systems that use human waste would not only reduce the need for sewerage system and thus reduce the costs and pollution, it would help people in future. Therefore, having solutions to problems that exist and even those that might come in future could help me spread the message of critical thinking and reasoning before implementing which is how I would love to be remembered.

Creativity in individuals is an important characteristic as it helps people get the potential of both themselves and their property. In industries such as real estate and interior design, it is important for an individual to be creative. However, this is not an easy feat. An interview with an expert in building tiny homes shows that although creativity could be an innate talent, learning widely about it can also give one option that could be better for particular situations. Learning not only involves being able to read but also network and observe what others are doing.
