Racial caste system

The racial caste system in the United States is a kind of oppression that has various harmful impacts on the minority groups and the people of color, especially black males. Besides, the castle has adverse effects on the entire society.  The majority of the black men who were given birth and raised in the United States have no access to fundamental freedom that democracy has promised each one of them (Wacquant, 2015 p.103). People who are felons cannot enjoy necessary freedom, such as voting for the leaders of their choice, primarily those who are currently on parole.

The majority of the black men living in the United States today have no freedom to their right to vote just as it was throughout the history of America. Blacks are also discriminated in the workplace, schools, public benefits, housing, and jury services the same way their great-grandparents, grandparents, and parents were.

Influencing factors

The number of convicts in the United States increased drastically 30 years down the line to more than four-fold. One of the factors that lead to increased prisoners is due to the increase in the number of crimes between the 1970s and 1980s, therefore increasing the number of the criminals to undergo imprisonment as their punishment (Pickett, 2017 p.593).

Secondly, the advancement in the technological field in the United States improved the strategies of policing, which further enhanced the effectiveness of the police. Therefore helping the police to increase the rate of catching and imprisoning the criminals. Lastly, the federal and state government introduced a new series of sentencing strategies for persons who commit crimes (Pickett, 2017 p.598). As a result, people had a high probability of imprisonment with very long incarceration.

Reasons for most people in prison

There are most people in jail because of the implementation of stricter supervision policies post-release and tight sentencing policies, which does not aim at changing the criminal behavior of an individual. Besides, the length of incarceration is longer for every type of crime. The less serious crimes undergo incarceration leading to a sharp increase in the population of the prisoners.

The number of prison admission for individuals who are property offenders and violent individuals increased as well as the number of drug offenders. The parole failure rate was twice the previous rate between the years 1980 and 2003 (Moore, 2016 p.6). The majority of the prison admissions that took place in the year 2002 were because of parole violations. Deliberate policy intervention is the main reason as to why most people are in prison in the United States.

Felons passing in the world

The felon tries to pass in the world by spending most of their time in prison or deciding to involve himself or herself in crime ultimately. While the convicts are serving in jail for their offense, many cannot act according to their rights. If an individual was an employee, the individual could not use their license anymore.

Besides, there is the prohibition of traveling for vacations or traveling internationally. Some of the rights that an individual cannot utilize include voting, purchasing and possessing guns, employment in particular professions, jury duty, housing, public assistance, and parental rights (Perry, 2016 p.14).

Reaction to Nathaniel’s experience

Indeed, it is a challenging moment to be part of the people who go through incarceration in the criminal justice system. Overcrowding in prisons results in compromising the level of care, disciple, and the rights of the prisoners. At times, it is difficult to find family members and friends who take the responsibility to come and check on you, which results in low self-esteem and self-denial.  After the release of an individual from the prison following several years of imprisonment, it is difficult to join the society and carry on with daily activities as before because of limited access to personal rights.
