Red Tides

Red tides a natural phenomenon which is caused by algal blooms when algae increases and discolor the sea. Florida has experienced so the most dangerous red tides due to severe harmful algal blooms, which are toxic and suffocating the coastlines of the state (Stanglin 2019). Algal blooms also deplete oxygen in water, releasing toxins that are harmful to human beings and animals living in the water. When the temperatures are warmer, the blooms of microorganisms such as protozoans and unicellular algae cause the red tides, and cooler temperatures tamper with the blooms, making them dissipate (Baldera & Brooker 2019). Red tides are natural since human activities in the sea do not affect the rise and fall of temperature in the sea.

The environmental pollutants leading to the outbreak of the red tides include iron-rich dust that blows on the desert and an increase in sea temperatures (Green 2018). Iron-rich dust blows from the Sahara desert into the sea, facilitating the occurrence of the red tides. An increase in sea temperatures is a result of a change of weather leading to the upwelling of nutrients from the floor of the sea, which is followed by massive storms and thereafter triggering algae bloom events (Dias 2019).

Florida has set out strategies to try and deal with red tides since they have been identified to expose people, fish, and wildlife to danger. Florida can embark on reducing pollution in the sea to reduce the upwelling of nutrients for microorganisms (University of Florida 2008). Red tides can be addressed by carrying out extensive research to reducing the occurrence and effects of red tides. The second steps involve putting aside funds for facilitating the recommendations, and the third step involves trying out a recommendation for the results. The fourth step involves the implementation of the recommendations and, finally, evaluation of the success of the recommendations. Wearing protective clothing such as a particle filter mask reduces the effects of red tides immediately.
