Reflective Discussion
The importance of human resource management was only brought to my attention in recent years after I got the opportunity to learn about this beautiful concept through a constant study of management as a course. I was privileged and lucky enough to pursue enrolled in this course because I have been able to perfect my understanding and career in a significant manner. Some of the concepts that I have learned since the beginning of this course include; (1) The impact of OSHA in the US work environments (2) the employee rights and safety, and (3) the employment at Will Doctrine. Other concepts included the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), USERRA, and the importance of labor relations laws in a work environment.
Out of these concepts, three stand out to be very important to me and my profession in general. First, the understanding of labor relations laws has enabled me to know my rights as an employee and all the benefits that are entitled to me. Also, I will have a Pease of mind all through my career as a union worker, and I am sure, even the colleagues who are non-union workers will also have peace of mind. Second of all is the concept of employee rights and safety. With this concept, I know I will be free from any harassment or discrimination in the workplace. I will not be exposed to toxic substances, harsh working conditions, and all manner of safety hazards. The third concept that impressed me through the course is the impact of OSHA on the US workplaces. With OSHA regulations, a reduction of future incidences since all that OSHA stands for is a constant review of safety procedures in an attempt to ensure that they are well known. As a result, I am aware that OSHA will protect me from health problems as an employee.
It is worth noting that my career is not only limited to being an employee. I am sure one day, I will be an employer. At that time, the above-discussed concepts will help me a lot in dealing with my employees. Through this course, I have known the best procedure to follow in resolving employee conflicts. I also have realized that the most effective way to resolve an employee conflict is to engage them in a discussion to know what they are thinking.
Lastly, I would like to point out that my perception of the role of human resource management, particularly in the private sector, is shaped in a significant manner. Throughout the course, I managed to read countless sources touching on this subject, and for that reason, there are two readings that I cannot forget; “National Labor Relations Board” and “The role of cooperative structures in workplace transformation.” These two readings changed my understanding of the private sector HRM concerning compliance with labor relations laws and the OSHA.
