Reflective Log
- You have been keeping a Thoughtful Log this semester. It is time to reflect on your learning this semester. How did the reflective log impact your education?
The thoughtful log I had this semester played a significant role in promoting my understanding throughout the semester’s readings since it helps in understanding the learning contents. It helped me in expressing my feelings, thoughts, and also in questioning what I have been studying. Through thoughtful log, I was able to compare what I thought and reality and knew that sometimes I was wrong on my perception of what some topics are.
- For each rating, explain WHY and provide SPECIFIC evidence as to why you gave yourself that rating.
I would rate myself the highest. This is because I demonstrated my reasoning, as I answered each question. I also supported my answers with relevant evidence and examples and even went to greater depth when giving out my answers. For instance, in the thoughtful log example 1, through in-depth analysis, I was able to clearly associate the terrible things with the holocaust victims and how they were all confused as they run to hide for them not to be caught. In the story, animals such as frogs, squirrels, and rabbits are symbolic to the Jews as they run away from the Nazis, who are represented by the terrible things in the story. In the second part, thoughtful log example1, through thorough research, I was able to identify information concerning the importance of teaching social studies to the civic, career, and college life. I clearly explained the purpose of teaching social studies not only as just a curriculum but also in its application after school life. Before this, my knowledge was limited, and therefore I was unaware of different disciplines of social studies and their roles.
- As you are going through your Thoughtful Log, ask yourself—what grade would I give my students for this quality of work?
As a teacher, I would give my student an A grade for most of this kind of work. To some, I would give a B as the work still has room for improvement, and they could be made better by organizing it with a little effort. Additional examples could also be used to make the extra clear to the reader. The works that I would give a B were somehow a little hard to follow along. But if the awarding of marks were only based on the answers, I would give an A, as the solutions were much researched and showed a high level of understanding. The answers went the extra mile from just answering the questions to the extent of providing an explanation, evidence, and examples where applicable. In the second part, thoughtful log 3, through high evaluation, I was able to clearly explain how a single story is dangerous since it leads to stereotypes and wrong conclusions. In the same part, the concept web was clearly outlined and easy to understand. It was displayed showing connections of the contents of a writing workshop such as types, components, and the roles that are played by different parties in the studio. In thoughtful log 5 in the first section deserved more explanation on how the clips described Germany before the war. Before watching this clip, I used to think that the Jews and the Nazis have never been in a good relationship, but I came to learn that before the war, they were all friendly to each other.
