Reflective report

This essay will discuss an incident that occurred on my teaching placement using Gibbs’ model of reflection (Gibbs 1988).

Description

I have a habit of listening to music while going outside, but my wired earphone was damaged. The price of the second-generation AirPods had just dropped and didn’t need to worry about ripping the wire. Then, I found the first item on Amazon was what l want, and the price is acceptable, so l paid money without hesitation. However, l found l made a mistake of buying the first-generation AirPods. So l had to search how to exchange the item. In China, l need to make an appointment on the app, and the delivery man will come to my home to pick parcel on time.

In contrast, Amazon provided four ways to return the item, which made me spend a lot of time to distinguish them. And it asked me to take my parcel to a convenience store nearby which also cost me some time to find this small store. To be specific, Amazon sent the new AirPods to me on the next day and need me to return the old one within one month.

Feelings

I felt so anxious at first and even want to give up exchanging items. I’m not used to shopping online in the UK, afraid to read the introduction of good in English, and it’s much harder to return goods than in China. However, I must overcome the online shopping problem, which is an indispensable part of my daily life. If l always afraid to suit the new environment and challenge me even in everyday life, l won’t have any improvement before returning to China.

Evaluation

I felt a sense of achievement when l returned AirPods in a convenience store successfully, which restored my confidence and believed every challenge in the future could be solved like this. Although l was frustrating at the beginning because l cannot understand why l made such a stupid mistake and waste me a lot of time. This is clear in the relevant literature, as Mandi Schmitt (2015: ) points out —— This is the negotiation stage. Gradually, the euphoria will diminish. You will get mad at the apparent “disorganization” of things. You will become overwhelmed with all the things you have to adjust to and either fell irritated or compelled to make things go “your way.”

Analysis

This bad online shopping and exchange experience is caused by my careless and not used to reading English. Also, l don’t know the difference in return model between China and the UK. In daily life, l always translate a paragraph or article in Chinese to save time and keep things simple. It is a bad habit that leads me dependent on Chinese both in the study and in daily life. When l search this good, l just cursory scan the picture, even ignore the introduction. But l am fortunately that l tried to search how to exchange goods on Amazon instead of saving trouble. It is a good start and entered a new stage of the adjusting stage. You will start to have a more positive outlook, interest in learning more about your host country, and make more effort to fit in (Mandi Schmitt (2015: ).

Conclusion

Now l am familiar with the process of return goods on Amazon and other apps and know where l can send the delivery. The reception of my apartment can receive at least one parcel per week. Although it is a good ending, exchanging AirPods can be avoided. It is a great lesson and left a deep impression for me. So l realized it’s essential for me to change a reading habit and do all things carefully. Besides, learning more about how to use Google Maps to get to place accurately is also important.

Action Plan

After that, l intentionally cultivate a habit of reading the word in English, which improves my sensitivity to English, even it will take a long time. It does not only benefit my study in Coventry, but also the IELTS test after Christmas. The result of IELTS cannot just rely on skills, accumulated bit by bit in daily life is considerable. It is also helpful in my everyday life, which makes me more comfortable to get around in Britain and gradually overcome the language barrier.

Using a map expertly is advantages when you stay in a new country. I don’t have a habit of using the map in China. So l asked many passengers when searching the convenience store, which spent some time and one passenger lead a wrong way. L need to copy the address code to the app, choose the best way, and then follow the voice prompts. It is an essential living skill.
