The presentation of data should be organized in such a way that it is easy to follow and allow the readers to understand. Negative and positive reinforcements are effective strategies that have been used to for behavior change among children. It offers one an opportunity to achieve the target behavior by either rewarding or denying someone something. For instance, positive reinforcement may involve giving a present as a motivator so that the behavior can be practiced more frequently while negative reinforcement involves denying one the pleasures they derive from doing something or failing to do something. Eventually, the target behavior can be adapted and the individual becomes more independent regardless of the rewards. A reinforcer must initiate a behavior and maintain the target behavior throughout. The case of Mr. Smith confining his dog to allow Trevor to play more often may be considered a negative reinforce because it fails to help Trevor to get used to the dog, but rather increases the fear for the dog. Positive behavior is when the target behavior is motivated and that it can be maintained throughout. If Trevor wants to get used to dogs, Mr. Smith ought to allow him to interact more with the dog and increase the motivations when he does that to encourage him. However, by confining the dog, he will continue to fear the dog and increase the behavior of playing more often. Here, there are two key issues; whether the target behavior is the fear of dogs or lack of frequent play.
Reinforcement is effective if it is applied on the relevant target behavior. The most important step is to identify the target behavior and consistently reinforce it either through positive or negative reinforcement. Maintenance of the behavior is key to the success of the process.
