Executive function (EF) is a mental process that helps people to focus attention, recall instructions, plan, and carry out several tasks successfully. As such, when children are represented with the chance to develop EF and self-regulation abilities, they gain lifelong benefits, and so is the society. Thus, the skills are critical for learning and development as they enable positive behavior and allow us to make healthy choices in life. Children are not born with these abilities but have the potential to develop them. Therefore, the study seeks to compare EF in children born with low birth weight (LBW) and preterm births with a group of infants born full-term. Specifically focusing on the differences in EFF elements and DMQ 18, between children born full tern and light LBW and Heavy LBW. Furthermore, the study shows whether the DMQ 18 and EF components are related to the groups. And whether there is a difference in EI enrollment for children born heavy LWB and Light LWB.

The study is essential as it allows people to identify deficits in EF and the strength of children at an early stage. The study was conducted through a high risk follow up clinic. The research established that the full-term group scored significantly higher than both the LWB groups on the EF elements that include plan, attention, inhibit, and working memory. As such, the study recommends the urgency to create measures of EF with specificity and sensitivity to identify early EF discrepancies as well as strengths in all infants in these groups.

As such, the study can also be replicated by future researchers and get the same results; therefore, the study can be generalized. For instance, BSID-III was used to assessing EF components in children from six to eight months while the sample size included three months to three years.
