Response: Body Positivity

Social constructs created by the society based on people’s dressing as well as people’s body sizes and shapes at times has a significant impact on the way individuals concerned take it. Some aspects of human nature are beyond human control. For example, one’s body shape or size is nothing we can make a difference to suit what we wish or that which the majority of the society deems desired. So by the end of the day, society needs to develop non-judgemental stereotypes and social constructs. Everyone, despite the shortcomings in their appearance, needs social freedom as far as societal stereotyping is concerned.

Yet the society is so quick at judging people from their dress codes, I suppose then that it should subscribe to the idea of “my dress my choice” to lighten the social conflict. By so doing, the society will also be trying to untie individuals from associations with some values or vices based on their choice of clothing. Defining people based on their preferences mostly does not guarantee that they are part of the opinion the society keeps building upon them. In that case, there are reasons as to why these people are opting for a particular type of dressing or code of conduct. Some do it for style, while others find comfort in dressing some way..

However, judgemental opinions based on human body sizes and shapes should never exist if at all, we need to embrace our bodies. No one chooses to have a particular body shape. Neither does anyone select the size of bodies they have. In that case, any social construct placed on massive, small, petite, bulky, slender or fat bodies should rather not be embraced instead, we only let the genetics have their course.

In summary, social constructs are either destined to improve one’s self-esteem or drop it only out of opinions some people have amplified against or upon some personal attributes. In that regard, it is human nature to judge, and as such, whenever a social construct is hitting differently, preferably hard on anyone of us, it is right of us to get used to it. Developing a mechanism where we can positively apprehend the impact will make any victim of a certain stereotype socially unstoppable.
