The year 2001 was a tough year for most Argentinians as the country experienced a massive financial depression that leftover seventy percent of the population reeling in deep poverty. The crisis also saw great trepidation that occur in November that year, which caused a majority of individuals to empty their bank accounts at the same rate they filled them. Such actions saw the Argentinian government freeze all bank accounts in the country to help mitigate the bank panic that had gripped the country. However, it took eighteen years for Argentine filmmaker Sebastian Borensztein to adopt the crisis story and turn it into a captivating and crowd-pleasing comedy called ‘Heroic Losers.’ The film finds humor in Argentina`s synonymous financial crises, which was characterized by massive misery and fear. In Latin America, there are many incredible stories and film ‘Heroic Losers’ brilliantly tells the story of how individuals struggle to make their dreams come true. The film, which features the popular film star Ricardo Darin as the lead character ‘Fermin, ‘ tells a rousing tale of how people can come together during hard times and seek what is rightfully theirs. The movie`s plot documents the case of a small Argentinian town called Alsina, where a group of friends pools together their resources to help foster their economic status. The year is 2001, and Argentina has been experiencing great financial depression. In the town, a retired soccer star by the name Fermin (Darin) resides and also runs a service station as well. In the wake of the crises, he wishes to pull out his family and community from facing the impending financial crisis. He aims to convert the grain silos in the town into an effective storage facility, which could be turned into a cooperative. The cooperative will be opened using funds drawn from Fermin and his friends after he convinces them to join together and invest in opening the cooperative. Their plan is, however, derailed by a conniving bank manager who convinces them to place their cash into a savings account at the same time the government declared that all banks be frozen. The freezing of their bank account means that their money was locked away and was hence useless, which meant that their plans were quashed.

Despite the adversity, the group does not lose, and when rumors spread that there exists a secret depository that contains the cooperative`s stolen cash, the group decides to take action. It is at this point that we see the character of Fermin (Ricardo Darin), who is their Robin Hood leader. Fermin devises a plan which will see the group conspire to infiltrate the cache despite the risks. Such a move calls for great resolve and inspiration plus a bit of luck to pull off such an honest but daring heist. Based on his actions, Fermin`s character tells us a lot about Latin America and its people. Despite the poor governmental institutions in place, the people have a personal resolve to achieve and hold on to their dreams. Fermin`s character indicates the positivity and the measures that people take to achieve their dreams without losing hope.

The films help in an exploration of Argentina`s socio-political system as well as the country`s class inequality. The film resonates with its audiences, who perhaps witnessed Argentina`s crisis firsthand. The protagonists of the films are everyday individuals who are honest and hard-working people who fell victim to a crisis that remains very clear in Argentina`s collective memory. Unlike the rest of the population, our group of heroes in our drama film takes matters into their own hands, and they execute it in the most ingenious, hilarious yet rebellious way possible.

The film Heroic Loser comprises of various quotes which add meaning to the film`s message and theme. The first quote is ‘We’re not thieves’ insists Fermin (Borensztein). In the quote, Fermin, who is the ringleader during the heist, insist that they are not doing anything wrong, but they are rather taking their money back. In the second quote, ‘we are a group of giles, ‘ which means that the group was comprised of good people. Third, ‘Bank withdrawals limited, new government measure.’ The move sees the group`s move withheld in the bank`s account, leading to building up of the story. Fourth, ‘Manzi built a vault to hide the money he stole from us.’ The quote documents the part where the group discovers that the bank manager Manzi only played them to steal their hard-earned cash. Fifth, ‘enough is enough.’ In the quote, Fermin declares war to recover back their hard-earned money (Borensztein).

In conclusion, the film reminds us of the resolve that the people in Latin America have and that even when our political institutions fail us, we cannot give up. Still, we have to look to our other likeminded individuals and hold on to our dreams. Most of all, the film portrays the very best of Argentinian values that arise to the surface. The film depicts this value, which comes in the form of a special kind of strength that comes when people learn to get up each time they fall.
