Rough Draft: Preparation
The topic that I chose to cover in my rough draft was human trafficking – specifically, why is human trafficking proliferating? I found myself drawn to this topic because I have noticed a recent increase in news stories about this subject. One case, which allegedly involved multimillionaire financer Jeffrey Epstein and other elite figures from American society, took the media by storm. This and other examples would pique my interest for this subject.
For my audience, I plan to address, mostly, college-aged individuals who are not aware or are only becoming aware of the prevalence of human trafficking. Because there are populations that are more at-risk of being victims of human trafficking, I would also like to reach them – mainly, young women and LGBT youth.
In order to write my rough draft, I will need to do a lot more research regarding the matter. I would need to find information about the human trafficking trends in the past and in the present, so that they can be properly compared. I would also need to look into the different theoretical perspectives that seek to explain the continuous occurrence of human trafficking. Finally, I will need to get information about the material factors that can also increase human trafficking, like socioeconomic need or changes in policy.
My research questions will be geared towards all the different areas of exploration that I have identified. They include: What social, cultural, economic or political factors contribute to the continuation of human trafficking? What has been the change, if any, on the rates in human trafficking? What are some of the most prevalent trends in human trafficking?
