Critical Thinking Questions
- Will this affect the care delivery model?
Yes, it will affect care delivery because having RNs replace LPNs will create different care delivery patterns. Team nursing presupposes that every team member can approach a client from many different perspectives because of the hierarchy of skills. If more RNs are to be hired, then this will shift the teams’ activity density. RNs offer a broader or more extensive scope of practice than LPNs, which signifies that they can perform various tasks and clinical operations (Long, 2021). Such changes could affect how care is planned and delivered between the teams and within each one. This could add to the overall technical competency within each team. However, changes in working procedures and means of communication with other people may also be demanded to guarantee that everybody is optimally employed in the group.
- Could this change affect patient care?
Although it may impact patient care positively and negatively, such a change remains possible. On the positive side, having more RNs could improve patient care quality by introducing additional clinical expertise and the direct capacity to manage complicated clinical or medical events. This may result in more patients getting cured, health care practitioners’ early diagnosis of conditions, and effective treatment. Even with the change of leadership being handled effectively, it might result in clarity in roles and responsibilities or duplication amongst the team members. Some of the issues that may arise from the implementation of the change initiative include the following: LPNs and UAPs might feel that they are left with little to do or are entirely unsure of what is expected of them regarding their work, where this would result in lack of teamwork, lack of efficient working among the team members. This means having clear protocols on the responsibilities of the team members and exceptional attention to providing proper training to RNs, the biggest group of staff. This change has the intended positive impact on workflow and the quality of service offered.
