Script 1: The Fantastic Mr. Fox

Design Setting

In the majority of the shots, the camera is usually up close, focusing on the characters in active communication. I noticed that the cameras are at FOCUS, and the color setting is a simple theme black and white color with shades to indicate shadow effect. Even though some of the environments are considered interior (INT), they are still within the jungle. But, within particular spaces such as holes on the ground or in tree trunks. The characters are animals with human capabilities. They speak and interact among themselves in the jungle. Humans are involved in representing the human-wildlife conflict that can be referred to in the modern days. Low angular shots are also taken; as Mr. Fox crept in the bushes, a LOW ANGLE CAMERA shot is used to show how he was doing it.

Character Description

Mr. Fox

Mr. Fox plays out as the main character. Although he is a fox, he is seen to have several human characteristics. He has the capability of speaking different animal languages. For this reason, he is portrayed as smarter and more intelligent compared to other human characters. Mr. Fox is also described as a genius individual; he uses his high intellectual level to source food for both his family and other animals. The fact that he possesses an overly confident character contributes to the discovery of his house by the three farmers. Despite the hunt, he survives. Mr. Fox has a generous personality, even though he risks his life to get food for his family, he still manages to share with others.

Mrs. Fox

Mr. Fox is a caring and loving fox to her husband and children. She shows genuine concerns about Mr. Fox as he goes out to hunt for food. She also ensures that her four children are well fed. She indicates signs of the love and care that human mothers have for their families. She is also soft-spoken to her husband and asks him to be very careful as he goes out to hunt.

Boggis

Boggis is a chicken farmer. He raises a large number of chickens on his farm in thousands. Physically, he is extremely obese. This fact is evident from the extremely protruding belly and large body. He is also said to be eating several chickens in a single day. Even though he has thousands of chicken, he still pursuits Mr. Fox for stealing from him. It shows how mean he is.

Bunce

Bunce is another farmer who keeps geese and ducks in thousands all over his land. Unlike Boggis, he is overweight but dwarf. He is the shortest of all three farmers. He shows signs of intelligence by trying to trap Mr. Fox using a burrow, but he fails.

Bean

Bean is also a farmer; he grows apples and rears turkeys. He puts more care for the apples he has grown. Unlike the other two farmers, Bean notices that the Fox family steals from him and comes up with a plan to trap them. This approach is an indication that he is the smartest of all the farmers. He plans for a technique that will trap not only Mr. Fox but also Mrs. Fox and the rest of his family. It is a look into the future that will result in a lasting solution rather than fixing just Mr. Fox and leaving the rest.

The small Foxes

These are the children to Mr. and Mrs. Fox. There are termed in the play as the dependent level children, who cannot hunt food for themselves. They help in forming a solid family bond between Mr. and Mrs. Fox as they thrive to keep the family alive and healthy. They are all loved by their parents, as Mr. Fox advises them to listen to their mother when he is away. It is an indication that the small foxes are obedient and disciplined.

Dialogue

FADE IN:

INT. Mr. FOX’S HOME

Mr. Fox is preparing to leave for a hunt. His wife has come to wish him well and see him off. Before he leaves, he carefully plans what and where he will hunt for dinner. He gathers his family together to have a little chat before he goes.

TITLE

The shooting

V.O Mr. FOX

(Getting ready to leave; to his children)

I am hoping that we will do as we always do. I need all of you                                            to be safe, and so do as your mother tells you.

(Turning to his wife)

I hope you’ll stay safe until I return with something to eat. I won’t be gone for long.

Mrs. FOX

(Worriedly)

And you stay safe too out there. I hear our threats have multiplied.

Mr. FOX

(Nodding in agreement)

Yes, the farmers are hunting for us now. They were close to                                                 capturing me the last time, but I managed to escape.

Mrs. FOX

(Sad face)

It would be terrible if we lost you, we are still a young family                                              with lots of responsibilities.

Mr. FOX

(Optimistic)

I know we will always survive like we have since we were young.                                      Everything will be fine. I will be back in no time.

Mr. Fox leaves his house and heads into the jungle.

CUT TO:

EXT. THE JUNGLE

It is quite as calm air flows swiftly through the woods. Mr. Fox tip-toed further into the jungle carefully as usual. He makes sure he is following the usual safe spots before making the next move. That way, it will be difficult for the farmers to trace him back to his home. But just as he was going to his next safe spot, he had something, and people were talking.

V.O BOGGIS

(Whispering)

Why is it taking so long for the god damn fox to come out?!

BEAN

(Whispers Calmly)

You can’t catch the fox in a hurry; you must be patient.

BUNCE

(Whispering in Agreement)

Yes, that animal has done as so much damage, I will wait                                                    the longest time I can.

Mr. Fox notices that he is in the danger zone. The farmers were right ahead of him now. He quickly thinks through what he should do. Now that he has limited options to continue with the journey, Mr. Fox chooses to creep back to alert the others.

Mr. FOX

(In thought)

I should go back and alert my family; they are not safe at this point

He creeps a few meters and then stands to listen. The farmers aren’t whispering to each other anymore.

Mr. FOX

(In thought)

Why are they not whispering? Have they gone?

He sniffs in the air to figure out whether the farmers were still around. The moon is high up in the sky. And now he can see something in the bushes behind a tree. Mr. Fox still stands still observing.

Mr. FOX

(In thought)

What is that? And why is it not moving? That’s strange.

Mr. Fox hears no sound nor any scent at all. He decides to creep further; he was now a few meters to the hole, where his house was. Just as he was about to make his last move, gunshots are heard loud and close.

BUNCE

(Asking from far)

Did we get him?

BOGGIS

(Loudly)

I don’t know I can see him around here

BEAN

Let’s move closer so we could so we find out.

All three move close to finding out the outcome of the shooting. They get close and find nothing a fox’s trail.

BOGGIS

(Angrily)

Damn it! We missed him

BEAN & BUNCE

(Together)

What?!

BOGGIS

We could have shot him when he was up close. We got his tail, though.

Script 2: Where the Wild Things Are

Design Setting

The camera techniques applied for the shots is FOCUS –a wide coverage fixed camera that covered the scenes all at once. All the characters that included Max and the wild things were all covered on the screen during the screenplay. LANDSCAPE camera angle is also used to show lateral image distance between wild things on the shore and Max in the boat sailing away. This camera angle communicates the drift that is building between Max, who was the King of the wild and wild things. At a glance, it is evident that the theme of the scene is separation. The primary color used for the characters is brown, and Max is white clothing that continues from head to toe. The former indicates wild creatures, but the latter indicates civilized creatures in clothing. That could be the cause of the drift and separation.

Characters Description

Max

Max was an authentic character as he was the King of the wild. He would command, and the wild things would obey him. Based on his physical appearance, he is smaller in body size and young.

Wild Things

Wild things are damn and foolish. Even though they have massive scary physical figures, they take instructions and commands from Max. They are even told when to sleep by Max. Besides, they can also be described as cunning; they threaten to eat Max if he goes and leaves them in the wild. It is not the case as they love and adore him that they do not want him to leave.

Dialogue

FADE IN:

EXT.OUT IN THE WILD

Max is sitting in observation of wild things. He had early commanded them to sleep. It was at this time that he is genuinely having peace of mind.

TITLE

Out in the wild and the flee

V.O MAX

(Whispering to himself)

All this is not what I want; this place is not my place. I deserve to                                      leave among real people, where I will be loved.

(A long silence; to himself)

But how can I get out of here without waking wild things up?

(A short silence; and a realization)

Ahaahh! I know what to do.

The wild things are still deep asleep. Max sneaks out to the river nearby and notices a boat. He is filled with excitement.

MAX

(Whispers to himself; now in a shaky voice from the cold wind)

By the time they wake up, I will be long gone.

He gets into the boat, and as he rows offshore, the sound of the water wakes one of the wild things up.

WILD THING I

(Surprised by the absence of the King)

Where is the King of the wild?

Wild thing I notice, the king rowing away and wake the other up to gather around the shore. The wild things begin to plead with Max to stay.

WILD THING 2

(Filled with confusion)

Hey! You can’t leave; be with us. You are the King of the wild.

MAX

No! I need to find love somewhere else. My place is not in the wild.

WILD THINGS

(Together)

Nooo!!!

They all gather at the shore filled with anger that Max is leaving without them.

WILD THING 3

(Angrily)

We shall come for you, and we will eat you!

Max continues rowing away, ignoring the pleas and threat from the wild things on the shore. The wild things are left murmuring in anger.
