Social Media and Political Socialization

The rise of the internet as a medium of communication continues to alter traditional concepts of political socialization. Traditionally, cultural and demographic factors were responsible for an individual’s political socialization, as interactions with families, friends, school, religion and media played a significant role in influencing their political opinions. However, the advance of social media continues to sees politicians and sell their ideologies to members of the public in a real-time fashion, which fosters information overload and leaves minimal room for their scrutiny (Grow and Ward 1). This situation continues to lure the masses to form their political ideals based on what politicians post online and not the information acquired through social forums that encourage face-to-face deliberations. It, therefore, profoundly explains the rapid spread of populists among the American masses.

In this regard, politicians, as agents of political socialization, have a responsibility to ensure that they disseminate accurate information through their social platforms. In an era where fake news marks political campaigns, it is increasingly likely for voters to institutionalize incorrect or false claims and ideologies made by the political class in decision-making(Grow and Ward 1). Hence, the move by legislators to be embrace honesty in commenting on the issues affecting the masses can help sell them empower the masses to acquire accurate information to influence their political decisions.

The voting public, on the other hand, must establish means through which they can verify the accuracy and authenticity of social media campaign messages. Instead of believing in information at face value, they should confirm that the news authentic by comparing it with similar data posted through other legitimate media websites. For instance, a statement by a politician on Facebook should have its equivalent in mainstream media, including reliable television or radio stations and newspapers. These mediums can help the voter to authenticate the messages posted by politicians online hence make informed judgments.
