Sound Times Organization
Sound Times is an initiative that provides mental health and addiction services in downtown Toronto, Ontario. The best thing in this organization is that it is run and operated by experts who have experiential information of addiction, mental and criminal justice systems. The members receive different experiences of services from both members and staff and even fellow consumers and survivors. Therefore, the quality of services rendered in the organization cannot be compared to any other mental health organization.
Just like any organization, Sound Times looks forward to expanding its services. Will this be possible? In my opinion is that as it develops, funding is going to be very difficult. Today, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care maintain all the funding through the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network. This is possible due to the current population of the clients. What will happen if the clients become too many? That will mean that funding will increase. That might happen at a point when the ministry has not budgeted for the extra expenses and will force the members of Sound Times to strain. Besides, the initiative receives support from external aids. The aids that are collected together with the funds from the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network enable activities to run smoothly. However, the grants are not constant, and maybe one day, they might decide to back off, and then some of the activities will be paralyzed. Another speculation is that the services provided are going to be diluted as the increased use of substance continues to prevail, especially the developed countries. With the legalizing of some substances such as marijuana, those concerned should be aware that there are campaigning for increased addiction among the users. At the end of the day, the addiction cases are taken to the Sound Times to be dealt with. Therefore, as these cases increase, the quality of services will be diluted. This due to the saying that the less the clients, the quality the services. When clients are many, there is a possibility that they will not be attended to efficiently as expected. There is a possibility that the staff with knowledge of the addiction, mental health, and criminal justice systems might be less compared to the clients coming to seek assistance from the initiative. Another possibility is that since it offers quality services to the members, there is a possibility of people traveling far and wide to receive these services, thus resulting in poor services.
There is speculation that it might be influenced by the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, nation, and religion. This is due o the increase of racism and discrimination that is being experienced, especially in the Western countries. If this happens, then there is a possibility that some members are going to end their membership, and some staff to lose their jobs. However, no one wishes that this should happen, but in case it happens, then we should be ready as change is inevitable.
In conclusion, Sound Times is an essential initiative. Those people with mental health addiction and criminal justice issues should be encouraged to be members to get quality assistance. However, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care should be ready to accept changes that are likely to happen in the organization; embracing change will inhibit the disruption of services.
