Sources of News Outlet for Comparative Analysis
Introduction
The outbreak of the Novel Corona Virus (COVID-19) is one of the biggest challenges facing the world in contemporary days (Bogoch et al., 2020). As the virus spreads globally, epidemiological information is required to inspire situational awareness and intervention mechanisms. This proposal focuses on media representation of the Corona Virus and how the media has contributed to the disease awareness in the Canadian context.
Sources of News Outlet for Comparative Analysis
This study will harness two main news outlets for purposes of comparative analysis, namely; the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. The selection of the two news outlets is motivated by their capacity to integrate high levels of citizen journalism into their broadcast practice through, for instance, including eyewitness footage from cell phones, real-time posting and commenting. The two news outlets also can accommodate citizens into current news events not as news creators but as agents of news analysis from which valuable insights are extracted on the subject of the 2019 Novel Corona Virus. The move by the New York Times to present news programs based on news from her reporters stationed around the world inspires trust upon their content. Wall Street is the largest newspaper in the US by circulation and is readily available in different options ranging from iPad to iPhone, thus making it accessible in rural contexts. The New York Times and Wall Street Companies have historically won numerous Pulitzer prices, and therefore this study finds the duo reliable.
Foundation of Topic Selection
The selection of the New York Times and Wall Street media outlets is motivated by their impacts on the prospect of citizen journalism in news dispersion. Citizen journalism refers to the broader array of web-based practices whereby the ordinary recipients on the news engage in journalistic activities such as video and photo sharing, affairs-based blogging, and positing eyewitness commentary on contemporary stories (Allan & Thorsen, 2009). Based on their in-depth engagement with audiences, the New York Times and Wall Street have accrued diverse audiences; and this perspective justifies their application in the analysis of this study.
Deuze (2006) suggests the success of minority, local, community, or alternative media in reconnecting media with audiences in matters of civic engagement is not the sole purpose of nonprofit companies. The New York Times and Wall Street News Companies have shifted towards being interactive and participative links between news creators and consumers. Consequently, the two media are symbolizing new humanism in the realm of journalism, public relations, and advertising (Goode, 2009). This study adopts the two media giants based on such convictions. Time Framework
The study critically analyzes the news broadcasted between January and February based on the fact this is the period when the Novel Corona Virus spread out. Focusing on the stated period, therefore, will inspire the application of relevant and updated data in drawing out logical conclusions and recommendations for policy practice.
The relevance of Selected News Sources to Discursive Characteristics of News Outlets
The study will demonstrate in-depth mastery of applied news outlets (the New York Times and Wall Street) by providing a historical overview of the two, and their achievements throughout history. Further, this study will seek to dig into the understanding of the applied media outlets by exploring their coverage patterns, ownership, and representational styles; to deduce systematic patterns on how the two media outlets have practiced journalism over time.
Research Questions
The analysis of the Canadian Corona Virus news will be achieved by answering the following research questions.
- What are the causes of the Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19)?
- Do animals have any connection with the Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) in people?
- What are the precautions to put in place with animal products or live animals?
- What are the precautions to take with companion animals?
Theoretical Frameworks
The study will utilize various theoretical models, including Bourdieu’s sociological approach in controlling the researcher’s autonomy while making decisions about the streaming news and the type of journalism to bring forth. As Bourdieu suggests, the study will adhere to the confinements of the Corona Virus Disease in the discussions and interpretations underlying the disease. Besides, this study will build on Galtung and Ruge s’ factors of consideration when choosing and analyzing the news. These factors include topicality, relevance, composition, unusualness, external influences, worth, and expectation.
Research Methodology
This study will search two main news outlets, the New York Times and Wall Street, that are presently streaming news reports on the COVID-19 not only from national and local Chinese health corporations where the virus began but also in Canada where the virus has spread. The study compiles a list of patients with the Corona Virus Disease in countries that the virus has spread between the periods of January 12th to February 29th, 2020. In Canada, the study will list the reported cases as reported by the New York Times and Wall Street media outlets. The study will harness quantitative content analysis to analyze reportage and draw meaningful conclusions.
