A majority of them have gone through top colleges and are well acquainted with different cultures from their college background.

Attention Getter: In life, you should never put the things that matter most at the mercy of the things which matter least. This was said by Goethe centuries ago and is still relevant today. In life, we have to differentiate between urgent matters and important things. Urgent matters always force us to act, and they are very popular with people since they are fun and pleasant to do (covey, 2004). Important things, on the other hand, require time. Important matters deal with your highest goals and results. People tend to react to urgent matters.

Statement of Credibility: Research on some of the most effective and top-rated leaders confirm that one thing that differentiates people is their time management. People who prioritize their work and schedule in their day to day lives accomplish more in their lives than others in the same period.

Relevance Statement: To accomplish your goals and mission in life, one must learn time management. Important things in life take time, and there is a need to manage time effectively to achieve the desired results.

Thesis Statement: knowing what is important in life helps you in time management. An added benefit is a reduction of urgent matters in life due to preparation and prevention.

Introduction

The difference between irresponsibility and responsibility lies in time management. A responsible person knows what is important in life and spends time on such activities. An irresponsible person deals with unimportant things in life, probably for pleasure. Irresponsible people end up losing a lot of time chasing things that do not add value to their lives. Such use of time makes people wonder what other people have in life that make them succeed while they do not. Others attribute people’s success to luck, connections, IQ, while research has shown that time management is the differentiating factor.

Body

In his book Talent is overrated, Geoff Colvin studied the best performance in the world, from sports such as Tiger Woods to the richest, Warren Buffet as a case example, to top CEOs. He concluded that the top performers in the world are not a result of genes or inborn talent but out of practising over and over again (Colvin, 2008). All top performers know how to prioritize their time. Spending a lot of time practicing creates the perfection required in any field known to man.

Stephen covey explains in his book The Seven Habit of Highly Effective People that the most efficient people schedule their priorities (287). Efficient people state their goals first and then schedule how to achieve them. Also, covey states that daily schedules are not effective and requires weekly plans to achieve the desired results (316).

Learning to say no helps in managing time management. This is when there are more important things to do than the urgent things needing action. Also, it is important to delegate some duties to others to allocate time to what matters (Mancini, 2003).

Knowing how to manage your time is essential in today’s world. With changes that we are currently witnessing in our work and lives, we need to keep updating ourselves to keep up with the changes. This necessitates managing time well and knowing what is important in life.
