Personality comprises of patterns of behavior, feelings, and thoughts that differentiates one individual from others. Personality determines the actions of people when faced with certain situations. People act differently during different situations. For example, when fellow workers in the workplace smoke cigarrete in the office, some will ask him to go to the designated smoking place. Others will keep quite while other will chose to report to the boss. The situation is the same whereas actions are different. Thus, personality is what differentiates people.
Based on the results of the survey on the big five, it happens that I tend to be conservative. New experiences are challenging and I don’t like them. Normal routines and process make me confident while performing daily tasks at the workplace. Introduction of new processes has been a big challenge for me. One year ago, the head of our department introduced social media as one way to communicate within the department. The usual communication channel was through the office notice board. Since I did not like social media platforms, I missed out on important communications for some time before I adapted to the new system. From the survey, I realize that others, too prefer traditional experience as I do.
When faced with challenging and unfamiliar situations, I become anxious. As an employee, I am worried with challenging situations that directly affect my performance at the workplace. It is always my aspiration to perform beyond expectations. But the uncertainty associated with new experiences makes me worried about the outcome. If a fail, my ratings at the workplace will fall which will put the security of my job at a limbo since the organization’s policies don’t tolerate low performance.
When faced with obstacles, my first step towards solving them is to think of a similar situation in the past. I will use the same tactics to overcome the current challenge as those that I used in the past. I become nervous when I cannot think of a similar situation. I hate to think that I will fail. My ability to recognize my emotions and those of the people around me help me see new opportunities. Difficult situations strengthen us emotionally and make us appreciate life. Although obstacles make me nervous, I find new opportunities to solve them. My ability to recognize other people’s emotions has been instrumental in promoting a healthy working environment for my colleagues.
A colleague whom we used to talk a lot in the office became silent at some point. She used to share her experience both at work and out of the office. At some point, I realized she was becoming less talkative, and she looked dejected and depressed. I knew there was something wrong since the change in behavior was abrupt. I could tell that something was not right. I successfully persuaded her to share what had changed her moods. It happened that a senior colleague was making sexual advances on her but she rejected them. The oppressor had begun intimidating her in the workplace. I sympathized with her since she was going through a trying moment. I came up with the idea that she needs to collect evidence every time such advances happen. This would make it easy to prove to the human resource department when she will register her complaints. She was relieved that she would finally find justice in case the intimidation persist.
New situations present opportunities to come up with new ideas. Helping others out of difficult circumstances is my happiness. I wouldn’t say I like failing; thus, I reason my thoughts well to make them relevant. I feel happy when my ideas help my fellow employees.
