Team Exercise 3
Information systems are closely linked with organizations and are established by managers to meet companies’ interests. Organizations should be informed about and be open to information systems to profit from new technologies (Hatami & Momen, 2019). The relationship between organizations and information technology is influenced by a wide range of mediating factors including business processes, organization’s structure, culture, politics, management decisions and surrounding environment (Laudon & Laudon, 2019). Managers should understand the mediating factors between organizations and information systems in the establishment of information systems for companies to benefit from emerging technologies.
Managers need to take into account the organization’s environment when creating new information systems. Environments influence organizations’ activities while they can also shape their surroundings (Laudon & Laudon, 2019). For example, companies in the fast food industry have opted for online ordering systems to improve customer service. The culture of a business paves the way for the relationship that is developed between organizations and information technology. The organizational culture determines if a business is accepting of new information systems such as the incorporation of executive support system in decision-making concerning sales in a manufacturing business. The organizational structure of a business refers to its shape or structure (Laudon & Laudon, 2019). It follows that the nature of information systems that are present in a firm reflect the type pf organizational structure. For instance, the bureaucracy structure that is present in health organizations allows the establishment of a single structure information system that is managed by the administration. Business processes mediate between organizations and information technology and managers should acknowledge that new information systems require change to achieve increased performance (Hatami & Momen, 2019). For example, individual routines should be introduced in a business for improved productivity. Organizational politics are considered in the creation of new information systems as they determine the diverse opinions held by people in businesses (Laudon & Laudon, 2019). For instance, the employees’ perceptions’ about the introduction of a new information system determine the success of its implementation. Finally, management decisions reconcile the link between organizations and information technology as they shape the future of firms. A business that has resolved to introduce new information systems is required to invest to attain the desired outcomes.
Information systems continue to play a significant role in the success of business because of the close line that exists between organizations and technology. As such, the factors that mediate the link between organizations and technology should be well-thought-out in the development of new information systems as they influence the development of new information systems.
