A huge pro is that people with similar attributes are likely to interact with each other, and this can influence social cohesion among them. However, such aspects or similarities have huge negative impacts when people have different interests and beliefs. The adage can also be used to infer the basis upon which discrimination and prejudice are based upon. Prejudice and discrimination arise due to perceived differences that arise among people. Certain individuals feel that others are inferior to them due to certain attributes such as race, color of skin, religious, or political affiliation.
When people use the adage to bring about prejudice, hate, and animosity can arise among different people in society. Such animosity has, over time, been observed to have detrimental impacts on people in society. Such issues can be reduced by creating awareness among people about the differences that exist among people in the community. The strategy may lead to a scenario where people appreciate some of the ideological and physical differences that are observable among people. Increased diversity in the workplace and society can also create a platform through which people would be tolerant of the differences that exist among people. Educating people about the evils that prejudice and discrimination have caused in the past could also help address the issue and the damaging effects it has on society. If such strategies are pursued, the adage could no longer have devastating effects in creating animosity among people in society.
Several sources are attributable to prejudice thinking. Some of the main factors are differences in race, skin color, and sexual orientation, religious or political differences. Within any social setting, differences in race play a role in enabling people to develop sharp differences over cultures and customs of other people that are considered to be different. When people fail to cherish such differences, there is a great likelihood that prejudice may arise. Prejudice mainly develops from perceived differences in sex and racism. It can lead to racism and sexism where people from certain races or given sex are discriminated against within a given establishment. Addressing the sources of prejudice thinking requires awareness to be created over the evils that it has on society and its members.
