Soares, C. D. M., & Joia, L. A. (2015). The Influence of Social Media on Social Movements: An Exploratory Conceptual Model. In International Conference on Electronic Participation (pp. 27-38). Springer, Cham.

The authors argue that information communication technology has a dual role whereby internet is used sometimes for sheer diffusion of information while at other times as a means by which demonstrations are planned in the process of giving feedback.

Soares&Joia argue that in the case of a social movement, social media and internet plays a significant role, thus bringing international attention and unprecedented pace, thus enabling the desire for literally real-time monitoring. The article present that the movement entailed the Occupy Wall Street, those who took place in Istanbul, the Arab Spring,20 per cent in Brazil and the Indignadas in Spain. The authors argue that the type of audience represented in the movement composed mostly of the young people brought together through the use of social media without any presence of any traditional mass organizations, parties or trade unions.

The methodology used for this study is the use of conceptual models which has rendered a possible discussion about the influence of social media in social movement, thus providing a better understanding and enhances knowledge on the academic research areas.
