The ever-growing world of QR codes
With the passing years, various methods have been invented to make it easier for us to access information. Yes, one of the ways is QR codes, also known as a quick response. By using QR codes, you would be able to verify information as well as upload them using your smartphone. The black bars that you see in the QR codes contain the data. The information is encrypted, which can only be accessed when you scan it.
Apart from condensing information, QR codes are used for various other purposes. They are used everywhere, starting from marketing, social networking, payments, and more. “In China, payment methods using QR codes have replaced cash and cards in just five years. It’s possible that in the next few years, new and better products could emerge to replace QR codes,” said Tencent’s Vice President of WeChat Business Group, Greg Geng. According to the CNN reports, in the year 2016, people in China used QR codes to complete transactions of around $1.65 trillion. Furthermore, in 2017, nearly 1.7 billion coupon codes were obtained using the QR codes, and researches are expecting an estimated growth of about 5.3 billion by the year 2022. In case you have not yet downloaded a QR code scanner or decoder on your smartphone, you can choose among these:
- QR scanner by Joe North
- QR Code Reader by Kaspersky Lab
- Avira Insight,

There are various industries which are using QR codes to simplify as well as expand their business. For instance, 4Jet has created a new mobile application which can be used for tire identification. Known as the Scannect application, it allows both Android and iOS users to scan and decode the QR codes which are present on the sidewalls of the tires. The code contains information about the origin of the tire, recommended mounting, and specifications. It is increasingly used in both commercial and passenger car tire applications.
Even the entertainment industry is now using QR codes to make it easy for the users to avail tickets. Earlier this year, Fandango, a movie-ticket company, allowed their customers to buy the tickets to “Brightburn” by simply scanning the QR codes on the television screen. Just imagine, you are sitting on your couch and buying your favourite movie tickets by scanning the commercials.
However, just like everything else, QR codes come with some security fails as well. Yes, it can get pretty dangerous if you are falling into the hands of a scammer. That is, a fraudster can easily replace any payment QR code with a fake payment URL. You can imagine how you can lose all of your savings as well as data by just a simple click. However, researchers are working their way to stop intervention from any third-party during decoding of the QR code.
