THE HATE U GIVE: WHY DOES KHALIL NOT RESPECT THE COP?
Review the definition of motivation in your textbook. This specific literary term is being applied and used as the main focus of your literary analysis, so it is important that you have a clear understanding of it. Don′t, however, feel like you have to use the actual word ″motivation″ constantly throughout the paper. As long as it is clear that you are analyzing the character′s specific behavior, you don′t need to awkwardly include the word ″motivation″ throughout the text. 2. Reread the actual work [short story, play, etc.] you′ll be using, and double check your notes on it [be sure you have a clear understanding of the main events/points, the correct spelling of names, etc.]. As you reread the work, look for important quotes/passages/words/details that you would like to include in the essay to support your theories. Be sure that your theories can be supported by the actual literary work and are not far-fetched ideas or just generalizations about the topic. [unique_solution]3. Remember that this is a literary analysis, not just a summary of the work. As you write, keep in mind that your essay should be proving something or answering some major question [i.e. proving your THEORY of what motivates or causes the character to take a certain action]. The most effective literary analyses are those that examine more than what is literally stated; they also involve ″reading between the lines,″ making an assertion based on what is implied, too. 4. Give your essay structure. It should have a clear thesis statement [a statement to clarify the main point of the essay or the main question the essay will answer. The thesis needs to appear early in the essay, preferably the introduction. The body paragraphs of the essay should also have clear topic sentences that help to introduce and organize the main points of the discussion. 5. Use the introduction of the essay to put the assignment in context [i.e to make it clear what you are writing about]. Give just enough summary to lead up to the specific question your paper is answering, and avoid including summary details that are unnecessary or irrelevant to this specific angle. Also, the introduction should always give the full name of the author and the title of the work [″Short Story Title″]: After the introduction, you can refer to the author by just the last name [Hawthorne creates a . . . ]. 6. It is standard to use present tense when writing about literature. For example, you would write, ″Cora cries and screams at the grave of her daughter″ instead of ″Cora cried and screamed at the grave of her daughter.″ Most importantly, though, is that you are consistent–not shifting back and forth between present and past tense. 7. Don′t forget to properly include important quotes or passages from the work. The essay should contain quotes from the work if nothing else. The inclusion and proper handling of research counts as 25% of your grade, so please don′t forget to properly include quotes from the story and any additional research you choose. 8. You may also use additional sources in your essay. Just remember to properly quote, cite, and list them on the Works Cited. If you have a source you would like to use but are uncertain how to cite it, please don′t hesitate to contact me for help [i.e. do not just copy and paste the information in your essay and plagiarize]. The Literary Reference Center is also a really useful tool to offer background information about the short stories. If you′re interested, here is how to access it: go to https://mgccc.edu/library/ (Links to an external site.), and select Databases from the left-hand of the screen. Click on L, and scroll down to Literary Reference Center. [The user ID is magn0122, and the password is learn2! ] Type the title of your literary work in the search box. 9. Create a Works Cited for the essay. The Works Cited should include the actual literary work you are writing about if nothing else. 10. Review the link [How to Cite Our Stories] in the Modules. It will offer examples of how to include quotes as well as how to format the Works Cited. 11. Most importantly, don′t forget to take a look at your originality report generated by turnitin.com. If the report is highlighting any information as plagiarized or similar to other sources, you need to return to your essay in Microsoft Word and fix this [i.e. either delete the plagiarized information, OR properly quote it, cite it, and add it to the Works Cited]. Once you fix the essay, you should resubmit it to Canvas. See the Modules for a copy of the directions [for checking your originality report].
