The lottery is one of the controversial stories in the literature fields. As a reader, when you read the story, you place yourself in a position to ask many questions. It is a story that depicts many ethical dilemmas. The plot of the story is not what any reader would expect.
The ethical dilemmas depicted in the story are also seen in the themes of the story. The author of the story displays insights and observations about a man in a society that is disturbing and hard to imagine. The story clearly shows its true hidden meaning. The author indicates that certain things that are happening in the community are not new. Instead, they are evil and full of unethical features that have made them be slipped from the bonds of reality.
Besides, the author also uses the story to show the society what Lottery in real life means. Lottery in the story is viewed as a good and a bad thing. In real life, one can win a lottery by chance and change his or her life. What happens in the case where the person is lucky. However, Lottery is terrible as it causes a negative impact, which is characterized by inequality, crimes, among other harmful things.
Moreover, the story provides a clear moral lesson that places every reader in an ethical dilemma. Most of us are founded on the belief that evil does not come from conformity. However, from the story, evil comes of compliance, and the worst things people commit are usually things we are familiar with every day. Furthermore, we do not even have time to think about the moral aspect of the things we do. An excellent example is the story “The Lottery” is when Oscar wilder says that Most cruelty is simply stupidity (Syam, 2015).” It is a statement that shows the ignorance people have on evils that they commit.
