The most fragile states have in the Fragile States Index have unenviable characteristics of having failed political systems. For instance, Chad, Syria, and Sudan are dictatorial regimes. Besides, they are facing civil wars. For example, in Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, South Sudan, Libya, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, civil wars have led to the displacement, killing or imprisonment of thousands of citizens.

Additionally, these governments lack full control of their borders and territories. Further, external players dictate what goes on within their boundaries and often precipitate the wars. Also, they have severely suffered from other calamities such as drought, floods, and diseases. For instance, the government in Sudan was deposed by citizens who could no longer afford the cost of wheat and bread, in DRC and Yemen citizens are suffering from Ebola and Cholera and have weak medical systems. Moreover, their citizens are either living as Internally Displaced persons within their borders or as refugees in neighboring countries.

For five years in running, Venezuela ranks as the most worsened country with an index drop of 3.1. Besides, it has a weak political system. Infarct two men, Nicolas Maduro and Juan Guaido, claim the presidency. Moreover, its economy has the highest inflation rates in the world, with most citizens unable to purchase essential commodities. Hence they have migrated to neighboring countries.

Further, it faces many economic sanctions, especially from the USA, hence cannot market its oil, the lifeblood of its economy. Also, the State cannot deliver basic amenities to its people.  Cameroon-with, an index drop of 1.7, is facing a civil war pitting the francophone Southern States against the Anglophone States that want to secede. Besides its dictatorial regime has been rigging elections since 1982. Also, the economy is performing poorly with most citizens unable to access essential services.
