Introduction

The novella “Mice and Men” written by John Steinbeck explains how two displaced migrants that is George Milton and Lennie Small. He also explains the facts that separate these individuals from mainstream society, as discussed in the essay below.

To start with, George is depicted to be a very protective man. He has taken care of his friend Lennie for a long time. They are not related, but this does not stop George from protecting him and also enjoying his company. He is also seen talking to Lennie about their dream of owning their ranch. George also takes full responsibility for Lennie, and when Lennie gets into trouble, he is helped by George. Although George sometimes is frustrated by Lennie’s behavior, he later regrets and forgives him. At times Lennie is a burden to George, especially when he gets into trouble, but we see George not giving up. He also made a promise to Lennie’s aunt to take care of his friend Lennie.

Secondly, George is seen to be very hardworking. George is depicted to be very hardworking by the author. During the great depression, George searches for jobs that will occupy his time and help him be financially stable. He also comes up with ideas of where they will get the ranch. He works for a long time to get the money for buying the property. He is also seen advising his friend Lonnie on what they should do to help their future. Despite him being a migrant, he is seen thriving in the society where he is considered an immigrant.

Besides, Lennie Small is depicted to be a person with greater visions. In the novella, we find that Lennie is a mentally ill person. Despite Lennie being mentally ill, he still has great visions of leaving a good life and, to the extent of owning a ranch with his friend. He is seen reminding his friend George about their dream of owning the property. He also dreams of how he will be tending his rabbits. He also wants to be independent with his friend on his homestead and quench his dreams, particularly the love of his soft animals. Most of the characters in the book have the capacity and full capability to attain what they wish as they are both emotionally and physically fit. In a real sense, this character does not attain or even dream of being independent. Lennie is seen to challenge them. Although some members of the society dislike him as they even accuse him of attempted rape, the boss’s smaller son is also seen disliking Lennie.

Lastly, Lennie is seen to be very aggressive, most of the time, Lennie is seen getting in trouble most of the time, and he is rescued by his friend George. He also grabs a young woman’s piece of clothing and refuses to let it go, he is accused of attempting to rape her and this forces him and his friend to relocate to another place. He accidentally kills his puppy and Curley’s wife by breaking her neck. Lennie is depicted as having a very strange character compared to the other personalities in the book, despite killing both his puppy and Curley’s wife accidentally.

In conclusion, it is evident that many facts separate this two individuals from mainstream society.
