The Role of Technology and Social Media in Our Lives
The presentation by Jake Swazzey on TED X talks in the South Pasadena High touches on different matters regarding technology and its effects on people’s lives. According to Jake, life has changed with the continuous growth of technology. Today people are tethered in their phones and responsibilities that come with it such that people are obligated to respond to other people all the time and anywhere. Family dinners and friends night out have turned to be eating and staring on our phones for hours. According to the speaker, there is no longer private life since as long as people are in their phones; their lives are somehow connected to the public. Social media platforms consume too much time and energy for individuals that create a composition on people’s lives. Users of social media accounts, such as Facebook affect people’s lives. The nature of human beings includes continually seeking attention and validation from others. Since these social media platforms have been developing to do this, then the impact of these social media platforms becomes immense on people’s lives.
What is exciting and that i liked from the presentation is the ability for the speaker to link his topic on the day-to-day activities of every human being. He takes the listeners through a journey detailing how social media is affecting people’s lives and leaves no one behind. For instance, when he talks about having dinner with his family and not wanting to talk to them since he was a teen and so he just pulled his phone and logged in social media. This action is typical with so many other young people and has been normalized, yet it is one of the effects technology has on people. However, i did not like that his speech was short and did not detail much on how to escape the menace of social media infiltration on people’s privacy. This presentation is essential since it describes the qualities of a good speaker who is confident, funny, yet relevant in passing information to his listeners.
