The slavery in American continent

Introduction

According to Peter Kolchin, American slavery began in the 16th century and it was practiced up to mid-19th century when the abolition movement became overwhelming. The main item of trade during this period was slaves from the African continent who were forcibly use as manual labor in the production of tobacco and cotton. Actually, the invention of tobacco in 1793 led to high demand of the product in European continent and this helped to build foundation of the South Americas Economy. This was the high time for the demand of Slaves to work on cash crop plantations. Slavery activities seemed to be concentrated in the southern region but as the time went by, the ties between the slaves and the masters started worsening (Kolchin, 1625). Most of the slaves lost their African culture and adopted westernization. This paper elucidates on American slavery; when it started and its long term impacts on America and the new world in general.

Significantly, Kolchin (2003) asserts that, importation of free labor from African continent to work as slaves led to a long lasting legacy on building the economic foundation of America. All slave dealers expected their servants to work under certain rules and to accomplish their tasks satisfactorily. They had codes which restricted and governed their movements and life in general. The men who misbehaved in the work place were brutally tortured with women being sexually harassed by their masters.  Approximately, 6 to 7 million black slaves were forcefully imported from African continent, a factor that deprived African continent of its healthiest labor (Kolchin, 1631-1633) The slaves were deployed in colonies such as Maryland, Virginia and finally to the southern Georgian territory.

Ironically, Kolchin (2003) in his book narrates of the story about particular famous slave owners who treated their servants with a lot of human. The owners allowed their slaves to practice social and cultural celebrations. It is very influential that slaves were treated as normal humans in some of the territories. Additionally, they could have access to common amenities with those enjoyed by the masters. This act just the motive and general perceptions that had been bestowed in the minds of slave owners and most of the slave could enjoy the voluntary delivery of services. However, Kolchin narrates that slaves resisted the forced labor in most of the territories. This was justified through feigning illness at all times, slow working or through sabotage for their own advantage.

With introduction of new laws governing slavery, Kolchin speculates in his book puts that, slaves were allowed to marry and raise big families for the increased free slave labor in the Southern colonies. With the introduction of American Revolution, the masters on the Northern continent where slaves were not of much important began to spearhead the end of slavery in the American continent (Acharya et al, 75). Progressive slave rebellions targeting the white were recorded more in the south as compared to the northern region. The most remarkable rebellion according to Kolchin (2003), was that of Nat Turner which occurred in 1831 in Southampton county of Virginia. The attack was facilitated by 75 blacks and achieved to murder over 60 whites in two days, an issue that raised concern over the local white in the region. This event marked the onset of slave abolishment with the mighty William Lloyd garrison and Fredrick Douglas steering slave ban. The revolutionaries laid their basis on slavery being inhuman and a big seen while others terming its contribution as a zero effect to the American economic growth.

Conclusively, slavery in Southern and Northern American regions helped to shape the today American continent. Actually, it led to the formation of the new world that never existed. It improved on American economy and cultural diversity at large. However, slavery led to deprivation of African healthy men and women and mistreatment such as brutality, sexual harassment and torture. Moreover, it laid the basis of racial discrimination which still exists in various regions of the world today.  The practice of slavery on black population rendered the whole history inhumane and sinful
