THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES
All counselors must make use of some social lenses when addressing problems for their clients. Such lenses constitute what is called –therapeutic approach. In the context of counselors, the therapeutic strategies are categorized into two groups, which are behavioral approaches and psychodynamic approaches (Cosrt, 2020). Behavioral approaches have a temporary impact and focus on addressing an individual’s behavior and their patterns of thoughts. It is common to have therapists apply different methods depending on the client that they are handling. If I have to seek counseling services, there are several approached that I would recommend being applied to me. This paper discusses some of these approaches.
- Person-centered approach – the approach can also be referred to as client-centered therapy. The client is encouraged to dominate the talking while the therapist pays keen attention (Cosrt, 2020). The objective is for therapists to understand how the client feels.
- The cognitive-behavioral therapy – the approach bases its style on the assumption that people often get into habits and thinking styles that are not of benefits to them (Cosrt, 2020). The objective of this style is to assist the victims in identifying the existence of such behaviors so that they can change them.
The reason for recommending the above approaches of therapy is because I have a habit of talking much when I am emotional. I quickly spit out my feelings through talking. It could be helpful for the therapist to identify my feelings. I also get myself into thinking a lot over minor issues. I believe this is not necessary. However, I admit that cognitive-behavioral therapy could prove to be a challenge for me. It is quite challenging to identify the pattern of thinking that is not of benefit for you.
