Assignment: Over the course of this semester, you are going to write 3 Essays. All of these Essays are going to be very different, but related. They are all going to represent different stages of researching and building an argument. In this first step, we are going to complete an exercise that you will use to build toward your next two papers. Here are the steps to take:[unique_solution]
- Pick a topic that you want to research for all the Essays. This topic must be something that is debatable, and it must be something that is a relevant topic that our society is talking about right now. This should be something that you are interested in researching, because you are going to use it for 3 different papers. Try not to pick a topic that you already feel very strongly about, because that might make it hard to do the kind of unbiased research we will be practicing. “Abortion”, “gun control” are the only topics I am not allowing for this paper.
- Using our Library lessons in class, use the Broward College Library website to find an online article about your topic to summarize. The source for this paper MUST be from the library or the library website.
- Following our lessons on Summary from class, online, and in the textbook, write a summary of this article. Don’t forget to include the author’s name and the title of the article, all punctuated and typed correctly.
- In particular, make it clear throughout the essay that you are summarizing what SOMEONE ELSE is saying. That means that you must provide the title and author of the source in your first sentence and you must refer back to this author or the article several times throughout your paper, using the “they say” templates and active verbs to replace “says” as outlined in
Chapters 1-2 of the textbook. Use phrases such as: the author then explains, as the article says, Smith argues, etc.
- Your paper must show proper MLA formatting in the header, Times New Roman size 12 font, double spaced, etc. Follow the Page Setup Guidelines on D2L. It must also have a Works Cited page.
- The paper must be a minimum of 500 words. It will only be one paragraph, and we will discuss a proper topic/thesis sentence in class.
- Your paper must be typed. It must meet all the deadlines and requirements outlined on this document. It must reflect all the lessons learned in class and online.
