Titchener’s 1898
When he says, “dual character of the American psychological laboratory”, Titchener means that it serves two purposes. These include instruction and research. Therefore, the laboratory serves two types of people. One of them is students who need to attain essential concepts and skills which would, otherwise, enable them to be outstanding (Titchener, 1898). By being part of the laboratory, they can be exposed to the best ways in which they could manage to undertake impeccable studies. They also manage to learn about the value of research and the best mechanisms which could be used to obtain worthy findings. It is through such a process that they are likely to get the insights appropriately. Titchener is comparing the model to that of German laboratories. He says that unlike the American psychological laboratory, the German ones specifically focused on instruction.
The kinds of laboratories which might be conducted in Titchener’s laboratory as psychological. These touch on the concept of human behaviour and perception. Thus, the laboratory is essential in helping to gather pertinent insights on the functionalism of human beings and the perception held against them. The approach is vital in helping to show the specific approaches which can be applied in regards to dealing with human beings (Titchener, 1898). As compared to the experiments that psychologists currently conduct, the ones at the Titchener laboratory are thorough. They help to show cause and effect. As a result, they provide the ease of understanding the various concepts which are of great interest (Vlp, 2020). For instance, it is necessary to showcase how people might identify with different psychological concepts. Further, it is possible to determine the attitude which people are likely to have and their outcomes.
