Trump’s Impeachment
Over the years, American democracy relishes on its glory of holding peaceful, free, and fair elections. It has enabled the country to enjoy stability and ensure the concretization of the will of the people. Although President Trump was second in the popular vote, he is the rightful president. The speaker of the Congress initiated the impeachment on Trump after reviewing the whistleblower’s report that indicates the president’s abuse of power. The claim began from a whistleblower who stipulated the actions of President Trump when he made a call to the Ukraine president, Zelenskyi. While Trump’s defenders argue that no criminal statute prevents a president from soliciting foreign interference in the American elections, the abuse of presidents’ power, encouraging foreign intervention, and quid pro quo constitute the standard for impeachment.
Trump used his position to solicit favors from the Ukraine president. In a call, President Trump requested Zelenskyi to initiate an investigation on his political rival –Joe Biden and his son. Trump involved the Justice Department in the investigation. Though the facts of the case are indisputable, it was wrong for the president to use his power for his gain and it is one of the examples in the constitution that calls for impeachment. Encouraging foreign influence on a country’s Affairs contributes to a president’s impeachment. Trump sought to investigate Biden using Ukraine’s help. Primarily a president should not interfere with the investigations from law enforcement. During the call, Trump requests for a ‘favor’ from Zelenskyi to investigate Joe Biden. He indicates that “…the US has been very good to you…” (Cohen, 2019). Moreover, if Trump believed that Biden and his son committed a crime, he should have provided the information to the Federal Bureau for Investigation FBI. Additionally, Trump tells Zelenskyi that Rudy Giuliani would lead the investigations launched by his government (Cohen, 2019). Using Rudy circumvents the State Department channels, thus undermining the US policy towards Ukraine. The irregular efforts of using Mr. Giuliani undercuts the official foreign policy of the United States and thus impeachable.
The presence of a quid pro quo forms grounds for impeachment. According to the conversation, Trump offers to release the military equipment after the initiation of the Biden conspiracy theory (Giordano, 2019). Trump had an intention to extract the assistance from Zelenskyi before allowing the release of international assistance to Ukraine and permitting its purchase of American military arms. Congress apportioned the funds to aid Ukraine to maintain its precarious independence. Moreover, in exchange, Trump encourages the removal of the US ambassador to Ukraine, Yovanovitch, as he states that the “…the woman was bad news…” which is impeachable as it demonstrates a lack of faith (Giordano, 2019). This quid pro quo constitutes a form of bribery which forms grounds for impeachment.
The remedy to Trump’s misconduct constitutes an impeachment. Although trump supporter states that his actions do not constitute a criminal offense, Congress is aiming at proofing Trump’s words and actions are unconstitutional and warrants impeachment. The use of foreign government to initiate personal investigations through withholding aid to Ukraine comprises of impeachable crimes. The Democrats and Republicans will aim to consider the felonies such as bribery and if the facts support the conclusion that the president committed them hence qualifying for impeachment.
