Introduction

Ups Logistic Company is an American multinational logistics company that operates in over 220 countries all over the world. The company has its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, US. The company, which was founded in 1907 has grown to have a market value of $ 24 billion, with a total of 330 000 employees globally.   The company has one of the business loading and freight department, which deals in sorting, packing, offloading, and storage of the goods on transit (Knaak et al., 2019).  The activity is always labor-intensive and needs a considerably larger population of workers. However, with safety measures put in place, the company, on rare occasions, does have an instance where the employees are involved in accidents and other issues related to safety. Over the past year, three employees of Ups Company have been involved in an accident where two of them have lost their lives in three different occasions all over the world. The accident has occurred mostly in the loading dock. The purpose of the report is to analyze the Ups company workplace to develop an understanding of the workplace about safety.

General workplace layout

Ups company ware-house and docking area is a well-organized area where goods and loads which need to be transported from one area to the other are organized for lading purpose. The loading which is done using the safety cranes is well-structured and well-spaced for the purpose of the safety of the workers.

The purpose of the loading job is to sort, load, and organize the plan the sound ready for transit. The job exists because the company relies on efficiency. As such, it is the role of the worker at the loading dock to ensure that the goods or the loads are correctly sorted in terms of which products are needed first, which one is fragile and which merchandise is next in line for transit. Very often, the purpose of the workers at the loading site is to organize the goods or loads for proper transportation by the company and to reduce the risk of a good or product destined for one area being delivered in the wrong destination. Besides, this sorting out of loads helps in reducing the risk associated with damage of good on transit due to or handling (Isaksson et al., 2017).

Job description

The moving companies such as UP company do hire or contract loaders and unloader for the purpose of carrying out the various aspects of the over which includes packing smaller household items, planning how everything will be positioned and fit into the moving or the vehicles loading reporting and unloading or unpacking of the various item which are being moved. These loaders and unloaders also have the responsibility of ensuring that safety at the loading size is critical. A loader at the UP logistics company has the role of providing that the loads or the goods destined for transportation are so ready for the shipping. A worker in this line is responsible for ensuring that the loads are sourced based on the nature of the product contained, the destination, and size (Isaksson et al., 2017).

The loader has the responsibility of ensuring that the goods are adequately packed in the recommended sizes and placed in the right path for the cranes to lift them info the loading trucks ready for transportation both locally and internationally (Nielsen et al., 2018).  The worker is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that every product that needs to be transported is in good shape for transportation. Besides, the worker has the responsibility of ensuring that the load for shipping is not tampered with before shipment. As a general rule, however, the loader is responsible for any safety measure that is needed for any functional or load loading. In this manner, they ensure that the pressure is in the right measurement and is on the right path to ensure that the area is free from any accident that might occur (Zohar et al., 2017).

Duties of the loader

  • Sorting out of the loadings for transportation
  • Packaging of the goods in sizes, content, and destination
  • Ensuring that the loads are in good shape for transport
  • Promoting and ensuring safety in the areas of loading and offloading.
  • Developing means of leading and or offloading of the loading areas.
  • Direct the folk lifters into the best way of handling the loads which are ready for transportation.
  • Conduct the various elements of record keeping.

Physical demands

The works are physically demanding — the company for transportation. The loader has the responsibility of physically packing the goods, which are usually brought in different shapes into the boxes, which are branded with the names of the company. The loader has the responsibility of identifying the product or the good to be transported (Isaksson et al., 2017). He or she pulls out the product from the different centers which they are brought in from the clients, him or her, package the product in boxes, tightly packs them, and organizes them into boxes — the loader deals in weight that range between 1 to 100 kg.  The frequency of the work done by a loader depends on the day’s activity; however, more often, the loader at Ups company deals with a lot of lads owing to the nature of the company (Zohar et al., 2017).

The duration of the physical demand for loading activities, however, depends on the nature of the load which is being sorted for transportation or the product being packed.  For most body pasture of a leader during the packing activity do vary on what is being done or the nature of the works. However, the force applied is relatively from low and medium. Due to the nature of the warehouse where the loading activities take place, much of the strenuous activities are automated. As such, there is no higher vigorous activity done by the single loader as the robots do much of the work, which might be strenuous for the people.  The role of the loader (worker) at the loading area of the warehouse does vary from a day to another and, besides, can also change based on the physical need of the day. The level of the physical activity in a day is not based on a given aspect of operation but rather the requirement that might arise from

The loading activity at the company is labor-intensive. As such, the event is coupled with various degrees of physical business; this mainly is dependent on the daily load size and the need for transportation each day. However, the leaders at the company are assisted with robots in case the lading activity is relatively high. The degree of physical activity of a leader is relatively higher.  The events of loading for the worker here might involve various activities such and might also require the different body parts. The body parts which are often involved in the forceful extension during the loading include the hands, legs, and the necks into ensuring that the loads are adequately organized and sorted ready for the crane lifting or loading o the Ups trucks (Guillaume et al.,  2016).

Risk factor analysis

There is a various risk factor that faces individuals who work at the warehouse of the loading bay of the company. Despite the various precautionary measures put in place by the management in reducing eh injuries that are associated with the various risk factors within the organization loading bay. There is still little change that such risk factor poses more significant danger to the workers due to different reason ranging from just negligence of just the natural condition surrounding such instances.  Some of the risk factors which faces the workers at the loading bay include risk of injuries from the loads, accidents from the folk lifters, fire incidents dangerous chemical and brake from the various product that is loaded on the bay. However, the severity of the injuries or the risk factor of each of the identified risks may vary depending on the individual or the set mitigation procedures. Failure to adhere to the various processes at the loading bay can be termed as the leading case of the risk factors in the work area.

Discussion

  1. Manual Materials Handling (MMH) analysis.

There is a danger associated with the manual operation at the bay. Because most of the boxes are heavy and should not be handled manually, employees are often injured by the loads that they handle in various ways. The risk is even higher when the employees are subjected to little or no proper protection at the site (Zohar et al., 2017).

Injuries from loads

Due to nature if the warehouse at the Ups, there is the danger of an industry that could come out if either a load is falling or workers being hit by the load from some height. Very often, workers that the warehouse has been injured as a result of the duties which are wrongly placed or poorly handled. In most are the instance of the negligence of the worker has been the leading cause of the injuries that workers at the warehouses do encounter.  The falling loads of those who have been poorly stored possess as the most significant risk factor to the loaders working at the warehouse. Most of them have been in the past, hit by the loads, and have been physically injured in various ways. Without proper handling of the loads, most employees do fall victim to the loads falling on them and causing this specific harm to the workers, and such affects the other members of their families emotionally.  The case of the injuries arising from the same has tremendously reduced in Ups Company, perhaps due to the increased safety guideline at the warehouses (Guillaume et al.,  2016).

  1. Environmental analysis

Injures from the folk lifters and slippery surfaces.

Through this is a rare risk factor to most of the workers at the warehouse as most of the paths for the folk lifter are marketed and detached, in some cases, employees or workers at the warehouse in Ups have been the victim of the injuries arising from the same.  Lowers or in other case, drivers of the machine who ignores the demarcations, signs and the boundary on the paths do increase the risk of being it or knocking down other workers along their areas of work.   In adjust a year, a total of 6 workers within Ups company warehouse have fallen victims of the accidents or injuries that arise from the same. Most of them being it buy the folk lifter while others have been hit by the other robotic machine that helps the company its operations (Lo et al., 2018).

Fire

Every warehouse has the most significant risk factor being fire. Fire incidents which do break out as a result of hazardous material and chemical do pose a great danger to the workers at the warehouse.

Electricity risk

The other environmental risk is the risk of electrocution at the loading bay because some areas at the loading bay are mainly at the risk of exposed electric cable. Employees at the loading bay area at a relatively higher risk of electrocution. In the past, employees have undergone electrocution, that is. As a result, most of them either accidentally stepping or touching he exposed cables (Genat et al., 2016).

Dangerous chemicals

Very often, the compound is transported against the will of the company. Customers who, in most cases, do lie about the nature of the content of the parcel that they do send is another environmental threat to the pose a greater risk on the element of loading. The harmful chemical has, in the past, caused more significant injuries to the individual leaders who have had to handle the product without their knowledge and the recommended protective gear posing a massive danger to their health (Guillaume et al., 2016).

Breakage of the fragile loads

The risk of breakage of the load at the loading bay is one that faces the Ups company workers. With some product or lads labeled wrongly the handlers of such capacity are a higher risk of injuries that result from the breakage poor handling on the fragile materials such as glass may often result in the lesions within the warehouse during the time or sorting out of such loads (Genat et al., 2016).

  1. Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD)

The other risks are the risk associated with improver posture, repetition, and the lack of break between the working hours. The loading bay is relatively a busy one. In most cases, the employees are in most cases injured as a result of the long working hours at the harbor or eel some pain at the back or neck or other body parts due to the repetition of the same work routine and poor posture that these employees have to work for a relatively more extended period.

Recommendations

For risk associated with Manual Materials Handling (MMH) analysis, the following advice is vital in reducing the risks

  1. It is essential to have the boxes handled with robots in case the weight of the table exceeds 20 kg. This would help reduce the risk factor associated with workers at the loading bay, feeling heavy boxes.
  2. There is a need for sampling or packaging of materials in smaller, lighter, and safer boxes that can be easily handled to reduce the same accidents, which are as a result of the manual handling procedures.
  3. Workers need to put on protective gloves and safety boots to reduce the injuries that do come out as a result of the Manual Materials Handling (MMH). Besides, the workers at the site need to have more boots and safer ones, which would reduce the impacts that are often caused by the poor boots that they put on and result in them slipping off the floor.
  4. More expansion at the warehouse of the loading bay. There is a need for the company to expand its warehouse, including increasing the surface area for loading, development of the paths for the loading bay as well as improve the boundary at the area to ensure that the workers are safer.

On risk associated with the Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD) analysis, the following recommendation is key in helping reduce the risk or the impacts of these risks.

  1. On the element of force and awkward posture that the employees have to sit or stand over more extended time. The management of the organization needs to focus on the development of a conformable stand, which would offer comfort to them to ensure that their backs or necks and other parts of the body do not harm or they do not have to provide the more prolonged pains associated with the same.
  2. Most of the procedures of Ups Company are routine. There is such risk that is associated with an individual conducting or understanding a particular task over and over again as he or she gets bored and tired of the same procedures. In order to reduce the impacts associated with the same, there is a need for the management to organize shift turns or shifts for the employees to enable them to change from one task to the other from time to time. This would also improve the actual productivity of the individual’s employees within the loading bay of the organization.
  3. The company loading bay is often a busy site. There are little breaks for the workers within and the loading bay of the UPs Company. The workers are exposed to more significant dangers of getting injured due to the fact that most employees within the organization get tired and sleepy at the working bay this exposes them to eh risk of either being knocked by the cranes, boxes falling on them or being injured as a result of various boxes which keeps falling in them as a result of the routines procedures. There is a need for the organization to increase the number of beaks and shorten the working, however, for the employees to reduce the time that employees have to take on their working site and especially at the loading bay.
  4.  As a result of the injuries that keep on occurring a result of the various elements of no breaks, I recommend that the management of the organization need to plan for breaks in between the working hours to give the employees the opportunity of refreshing up and increasing productivity at their workplace.

On the aspect of the Environmental analysis, the following recommendation is necessary

  1. There is a need for the management of the organization to develop a full environment at the loading bay, which is safer for the worker. In most cases, the employees do fall off due to the slippery floors, their management of the organization needs to add some grip on the floor especially by using gripped kind of shoes to reduce the instance of injuries which usually comes up as a result of the same
  2. The other environmental risk which is associated with the loading bay environment is related to the boundary. The management of the organization needs to properly demarcate the entire areas to enhance the safety of the whole area. There is a need for the organization to improve the loading area organization to strengthen the area to reduce the impacts of the risk, which are associated with risk that the workers will have to encounter. The management of the organization can improve the entire areas to ensure that sorting out of loads for packaging and loading is made simpler.
  3. The other is the pilling boxes which are poorly stored most often boxes, and other loads do fall off from their areas of storage and hurt on the worker by falling on them and variously destroying them. As a means of ensuring that this is a thing of the past, there is the need for the management of the organization to develop safer selves, which would ensure that the employees of the organizations are more reliable from eh risk that are associated with this environmental factor.
  4. The other risk of electrical risk, Employees are often electrocuted as their workplace. There is a need for the management of the organization to monitor the cable from time to time to reduce the impact of the risk associated with this.
