1. If we use our sociological eye to see issues and opportunities, do we have an obligation to address them through social activism?

Sociology is the scientific study of society. Sociology allows us to see how social forces shape people both shape and. Developing a sociological eye will enable us to look beyond people and society and see how it works, such as the influence of culture on people. Besides, using the sociological eye, we see the world from a different angle and make a connection in common patterns that other people cannot notice. Using sociological eye and social activism are the two critical commitments of the sociology. Once we establish how society works, we are obliged to address the issues and opportunities in an attempt to improve them. The sociological eye and social activism operate together. While the sociological eye helps unveil the patterns of society, constructive social activism enables us to become productive and engaged citizens. In other words, individuals who have sharpened their sociological eye and use their sociology skills to enact change in society. If you have developed a sociological eye, you are obliged to use it for the good of the community.

The sociological imagination enables us to connect our persona problems with our social world. People tend to think about social issues as personal problems rather than public matters. They tend to believe in blaming the victim rather than blaming the system. Mills refers to them as sociological imagination.

• Homelessness- A significant population in the US is homeless in the streets. It’s a social problem affecting people of all ages. The main question is, what can be done to get the people off the streets?
• Unemployment- this affects not just one person but millions of people. Therefore a personal problem is transformed into public issues. A problem becomes an issue because of the public value it threatens.
• College cost- According to Callan and Finney, the college has become a severe social issue. Obstacles that make higher education unaffordable to all destroy our economy, civic values, and democratic ideals.
• Immigration- The United States immigration system is not providing fair and ethical services in the Mexican borders and also to the Syrian refugees.
• Healthcare- American are not getting access to quality and affordable health care. This becomes a social problem since a majority of people are experiencing it.

1. What role can you play in addressing/resolving these issues?

Addressing the issues above can be done by

Educating others- After using the sociological eye to notice the problem in the healthcare and education system, I can inform people on their right to quality and affordable healthcare and education as citizens of the United States. This helps enlighten people so that they can demand their rights.

I am advocating for legislation- Societal change comes in different ways. One of them is legislation. The social issue on immigration can be altered through changing the laws in such a way immigrants in the US are treated in a better way. This can be done by working with people with similar goals or writing to the legislators and advocating for change in federal laws.

Community service- Engaging in community services is a form of social activism since one is helping t change a situation. One can help out in the homeless shelters; this can be used while still advocating for legislation.

1. What obligations and responsibilities do we have to each other, to our communities, and society?

Sociologist owes society the obligation to contribute to the general good. The main focus of a sociologist is to improve the community. It also helps prevail the well-being of the nation through scientific investigation and maintain change in society. Although one knows the organization, they try to guide the shift in friendly relationships in the community. However, a sociologist is limited to the research on social problems, their effects, and causes, and also suggest measures to alter them effectively.
