WAITING FOR LEFTY

Waiting for lefty, is a story on advocate lefty Costello. The story is of a meeting of a union of the New York curb drivers who are on the verge of a strike. Harry Fatt, the union’s corrupt leader, however, does all he can to ensure that the strike is not actualized.  The absence of lefty the advocate also does not go well with the members of the union. Waiting for lefty has various themes that Clifford Odets tries to display.

The power of unions is one of the major themes that are focused on the play. Without unions, then it would be practically impossible for the small businesses that are conducted by the rich in the society. The author argues that the working class can take power in the community without generally having to wait from an inspiration for them to act. The unions in the play clearly signify the power that one can attain by simply coming together. The formation of unions in the play is a crucial component towards people empowerment despite the differences.

Corruption is also a key theme displayed in the play. The big businesses are faced with corrupt details, even to the extent of having people spy on its workers and employees. The unscrupulous companies go to lengths of pretending to be patriotic to hide their selfish agendas. The big business in the play do not value humanity and benefit more from misusing people. Fatt is an excellent example as he urges people not to strike to support the president even though his main interests in the strike are maintaining his corrupt ways..

Ethnicity is also a key theme that is deployed in the play. Most of the individuals, especially the workers, were mainly segregated because of their color and affiliations. The workers have thus to unite together and face the common enemy. World war two to a greater extent, had increased the hostility between people of different ethnic affiliations. The extreme isolation policies after the war also brought xenophobia in the population where foreigners were mistreated and not treated fairly, as exhibited in the rates that they were receiving. People from other races are ideally chosen to work for large companies only on the basis that they would have to accept lower pay. Fayette is seen in the play, only wanting to associate with the other races only if they are in a position to take lesser wages.

The setting of the play is based on empowerment. The background shows that it reaches a point in society where individuals need change. The formation of unions in this part was as a means of fighting the corruption that was experienced in the majority of the big businesses. People in the society have to come together to ensure that they at least stand a chance to stand against the large companies who are trying to oppress the minority in the company who individually have no strength to stand against the large companies.

In conclusion, waiting for lefty is a piece of literature that has clear themes on matters that affect the general society. Corruption and power of unions are major themes exhibited in the play. This is a clear reflection of how the community is and the various steps that can be conducted to ensure that the morality of society.
