What I enjoy and dislike about being a teacher’s aide
One of the things I enjoy most in being a teacher’s aide is the change I see in the students concerning their performance and attitudes towards education. Showing a student who doesn’t know the value of education, its real value, and seeing the student become serious makes me feel I have achieved something in life. Some of the students i teach have no one to look up to in life, and giving them examples of people who have made it in life through education, telling them to research it for themselves, makes a significant impact in their lives.
One thing I dislike about being a teacher’s aide is the way the school administration manages schools. Through my observation and interaction with them, i believe that they make it hard to achieve some goals in the school, with their thirst for power and control. Also, some of the administrator’s attitudes toward teachers’ aides are questionable. They make me feel as if they are too powerful, and I don’t see the reason to ‘shout’ what title you hold to other people. Don't use plagiarised sources.Get your custom essay just from $11/page
Difficulties faced when Politics interferes with school
When selecting staff for the school, some of the decisions are made out of school politics and favors. This makes the school have a team that is not the best fit for their roles in the school. Such people make it hard to implement school policies and goals since the said people are either unqualified or their links with influential individuals in school or outside make them feel superior to the extent they can’t be told what to do. This slows down the school since the performance and growth of students depend on these goals and policies. Such people in the school lower the standards set in the school.
When contracts are awarded based on personal preferences, the school suffers due to delays and inferior products being bought for the school. Most of the politicians and school administrators help each other to get into the office, with the school administrator helping local politicians in campaigns by using the school to gain votes from the students’ parents, or the politicians influencing who gets school administrator jobs. Such partnerships are later manifested in school contracts, which ends up in the same circle of people who helped each other enter their offices. This makes it hard to hold such people accountable when their supplies are of inferior quality or constant delays in providing the said products. Mostly it is us the teacher’s body and the students that have to do without the products, such as books, equipment, and look for alternative ways of teaching without them or delay some projects.
Most of the policies in school are made by school administrators or government, without consulting the teachers, or even thinking of their practical implementation and impact. This makes it hard to implement by the teacher’s body and wastes a lot of time when implementing policies that will ultimately fail. Also, some of the policies made are made by politicians and shaped around the electoral cycles. This makes any long term planning for schools a daunting task.
Co-workers interaction
My interactions with the other teachers are positive and have taught me a lot of things that I could have gained with many years of experience. For example, how to prepare the students for the final exams, how to relate topics under discussion with topics to be discussed in the future, and make the students have all the background information they need before they even start the topics. I have learned such ‘hacks’ from the senior teachers who have been around for years. Also, the relationships that the other teachers have with the students are encouraging and teach me and the other teachers’ bodies a lot. Since the students come from different backgrounds, most of the teachers tend to keep a register of the student’s background, their academic strengths, and weaknesses and how to help them improve. I have learned firsthand how knowing a student helps in his/her improvement in the school.
