What is the difference between and fair game and a rigged game, according to Schwalbe?

From the chapter, Schwalbe talks about the difference between a fair and a rigged game. According to Schwalbe, a fair game is when every person is aware of the rules of the game. Additionally, besides everyone knowing about the rules of the game, the rules themselves are the same for all people. All people are included, and every person is aware of what is happening at the time. He says that all people must be equally equipped to compete. Therefore, according to Schwalbe, fairness means that no person should possess an advantage over another.

On the other hand, according to Schwalbe, a rigged game involves individuals who get special kinds of benefits that other people do not understand. Riggers who rig a game typically do it in their favor, for them to win. Schwalbe says that this is completely biased and unfair since it is obvious the person who is going to win. Schwalbe says that riggers won since they have rigged the game. As one keeps reading the content in the chapter, it is easy to detect that this is a significant issue in the United States, specifically when it comes to the government and inequality among sexes, races and others. There is a lot of fairness in the world currently, which is discouraging. It has become so easy to rig in the globe for those with power, particularly to rig processes and money flow in the world. This lets larger organizations and prominent individuals climb to the top and keep knocking those lower off the pyramid.

How does redlining work to create inequality?

This is the first time I am reading about redlining and therefore had to look up for the term first. The term means to refuse a loan or insurance to someone since they are living in a region deemed to be a poor financial risk. According to Schwalbe, it is known as redlining since neighborhoods that were ineligible to get insurance or loan since too many black families live there are marked in red. Reading this statement is so discouraging. The act of discrimination in mortgage lending is being referred to as redlining. This is a form of inequality since not all people will have the same chance when it comes to mortgage loans and insurance. According to Schwalbe, this is how redlining works. However, it sounds unfair on many levels. What is even more unbelievable is how redlining is allowed in the United States. It is even more astonishing that redlining works and exists, especially in the United. However, according to Schwalbe, redlining uses neighborhoods to work to create inequality.

According to Schwalbe, how is higher education rigged?

He talks about how getting into college is pretty much rigged. Schwalbe mentions how sometimes a team can preserve its accumulated resources by making rules to keep others out of the game. The education, relationships, and the degree someone obtains when they attend college are resources that pay off later in life. Schwalbe says that more famous and prestigious colleges that are harder to get are more valuable in resources, and they payoff ends up being more significant. If a person could get to college, the support would be less valuable and scares. According to Schwalbe, this prevents competition and keeps the values of resources high. As a person is entering college, some requirements rig higher education. Schwalbe says that this can be unfair since it is not always about intelligence. There are times when individuals come from families who are aware of the school system. This is to indicate that there are individuals with special communication with teachers, skills, sources, and others. Some individuals don’t have resources, or they have poor resources, which makes it unfair across the board. These individuals with good resources and parents are capable of making better grades in high school, and they have a better chance to do better and get higher up top. This gets them to the next level, college, where they are capable of earning more money and power ultimately.

At the 2016 Republican National Convention, Donald Trump told the delegates that the American system was rigged against them, against average people who could not fight back or defend themselves. He promised to promote a level, fair playing field for all Americans. After reading Schwalbe’s Chapter 2, what are some ways that average citizens might feel that the system is rigged against them?

Some of the means that ordinary Americans might feel that the system is rigged against them is begging with the regulations. Some individuals may not be aware of the rules, or the rules have been written to offer an unfair benefit. Jobs are so unfair. An ordinary American can work so hard but get so little of the paycheck. A different way that an average citizen may feel that the system is rigged against them is the overtime for jail inmates.  An inmate can have more time for a drug than murder. Another way an American could feel rigged is their money and taxes. One might believe that since they are paying taxes for whatever reason could be, but none of the progress is being made, such as roads, houses, books, schools since some of the roads have been ragged for many years. This is to say that American citizens may feel rigged in many ways that need to be addressed to make fairground for every citizen, and this is what Trump was talking about. It may seem obvious for many people, but they have to think in Schwalbe’s way to understand and be aware of being rigged.
