What, So What, Now What Paper
Audience: Although I will be the only one reading your paper, I want to read it as if you were speaking to your fellow classmates’/college peers.
What? – Each student will introduce a Contemporary Social Issue/Problem that is important to them. They should explain exactly what the problem is and connect it to the in-class definition (which will come after Week 2 – Defining Social Problems). A.k.a. What is the problem?
So What? – The student will then make arguments as to why anyone should invest interest, energy, time, resources even passions into caring about this particular social problem. All the while explaining their own personal interest in the issue/problem. A.k.a. Why should we care? & Why do you care?
Now What? – Finally, show how we can take action for this social Issue (e.g. introducing us to local, national or global organization(s) where we would have the opportunity to volunteer, create awareness or donate to etc.) A.k.a. What is already being done about it? & How can we get involved?[unique_solution]
DETAILS:
- Paper length: 3-5 pages in the body of the report. Your report should be a minimum of three full pages or a maximum of five pages, not counting the title page and works cited.
- Paper format: This is a formal paper. Therefore, my expectations are as follows:
– Typed and printed
– Standard type face such as Times New Roman
– Double spaced
– 12-point type
– Number pages except the title page
– Avoid contractions such as don’t or can’t; use do not or cannot.
– The Paper needs to be submitted on Blackboard. I will not be excepting papers via e-mail.
- A minimum of three references must be included in the body of the paper and in the works cited using either MLA or APA reference style. (If you are used to working with a different formal citation style you may use it as long as it is preapproved in advance)
- Works Cited: A works cited is an alphabetical list of sources used in preparing your paper and does not count toward the 3-5 page minimum report requirement.
- Title Page: The front page of the report is a title page. This also does not count toward the 3-5 page minimum report requirement. Place the title information in the center of the page (from both directions) using a format similar to the following:

If students miss this assignment it is an automatic zero unless there were legitimate reasons with proper documentation provided (e.g. doctor’s note) and appropriate notice dependant on the circumstance. Once the documentation is received, you will be given the option to present on another day.
