SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS ● This activity will be conducted in class during Week 8 of Term 1. ● You MUST submit an online copy of your speech and a completed bibliography sheet into Google Classroom by 8.40am, 17 March 2020, and hand in a hard copy of your speech to your teacher at the beginning of your English lesson – Day 7, 17 March 2020 ○ Use Times New Roman or Arial, size 12 font, double spaced, single sided, numbered pages, stapled (no plastic sleeves, folders etc) ● You will deliver your speech, live, to your class. ● Speeches will be 3 minutes with an allowance of 30 seconds each side. ● A warning bell will be rung once at 2 minutes 30 seconds with 2 bells at 3 minutes to indicate that your time has expired. You must resume your seat after 3 minutes 30 seconds. 1 OUTCOMES BEING ASSESSED EN4-5C thinks imaginatively, creatively, interpretively and critically about information, ideas and arguments to respond to and compose texts EN4-7D identifies how language use in their own writing differs according to their purpose, audience and subject matter ASSESSMENT ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY ● You will be required to deliver a persuasive speech of 3 minutes duration about a topic that has appealed to you over the past term. ● The target audience for this speech is your peers and the purpose is to persuade your peers of your point of view/opinion in relation to that topic. ● This topic may be inspired by, or in response to: o the unit ‘Consumer Culture’ (but it does not have to be). Eg. ethical consumerism, sustainability etc; o your own wide reading; or o your interest in a particular topic. ● You are not required to reference your prescribed text, ‘The Truman Show’. ● You will need to research your topic by reading at least 2 to 6 texts from a variety of credible sources. You will record these on a bibliography sheet which has been assigned to you in Google Classroom and submit online with your speech. Your research should help you develop your understanding of the topic and provide you with examples that you can use to support your arguments. See below for the types of texts you could use to develop your arguments and obtain your evidence. ● Your speech will be presented in class and will be marked by your teacher. ● In class, during the presentations, you will complete a self-assessment and peer-assessment of one of the speeches. This evidence may come from: o your wide reading; o other stories (novels/films/documentaries/TV episode/series, Tedtalk setc); o news and journal articles, scientific reports, speeches et al 2 o blogs – but not anonymous ones o podcasts o encyclopedias – whilst you may use Wikipedia as a starting point for your research, this should not be one of the texts that is sourced in your bibliography o personal experiences/anecdotes ● Record your research sources on the bibliography sheet. ● Consider the context, target audience and purpose when crafting your speech. ● You need to include persuasive appeals and techniques which align with your context, audience, purpose and topic. You may have opportunities in class to practise speaking to an audience. This competition aims to encourage and maintain the use of clear and effective spoken English. The speech you deliver will be part of the oral assessment in each year to determine levels of achievement. Your speech will be presented in class and will be marked by your teacher. From this round, ONE class representative will be selected to present their speech in a year group competition to determine the Oratory Champion of the year group. Prizes will be awarded to the finalists from each English class and to the Oratory Champion of each Year Group. There will be a final competition between the Oratory Champions of each year group to determine the Oratory Champion of the College.
