the characters used in the play are also essential in supporting the themes in the play. among the main characters that promote the theme of love are Troy and Rose.  For troy, the theme of love is manifested through his inability to give the family the life that they deserve, and his inability to receive love. The theme of love is also portrayed by character Rose through attempts to ensure the safety of her family.  as Troy repairs the fence, he explains that the reason why Rose wants the fence repaired is that she loves her family.

theme of responsibility

the other responsibility available in the play is the theme of responsibility. it is expressed through the possession of an outlook of faithfulness and being a part of something considered greater than oneself. the outlook that the main character, Troy, has of hi gamily is that he has the responsibility of taking care of them. he has to use his work as a garbage man to generate means of providing the essential needs for his family. he is worried about the desires of his sons, where one feels the desire to be a jazz musician, and the other one wants to play football.  he feels that they would be harmed by the racism of the white world and that they are better off taking up political trade.  as the father, he feels the desire to protect his sons. he is tired of paying bills and fears death. the result of his sense of responsibility and the caring role he has for his family leads him to have an extramarital affair.

the use of dialogue is responsible for promoting the theme of responsibility in the story. dialogue is used in a special way that suggests that the said words were said because of love. dialogue supports this fact through the confession that Troy makes to his wife when he admits that he had been having an affair with Alberta. communication to his wife where he says: “She gives me a different idea . . . a different understanding about myself. I can step out of this house and get away from the pressures and problems . . . be a different man. I ain’t…” the plot portrays the theme of responsibility when Troy asks the football league not to allow his son to play. even with the fact that the move may seem selfish, the main reason as to why troy does not want to let his son pay is that he is afraid that Cory could get hurt. the refusal of Cory to play on the league is a move that His father attempts to take to prevent him from the pain of being refused to play, as Troy feels it is his responsibility to protect his son.
