Section 1:Introduction

Sociology is the art of studying collective behavior development, structure, and functionality of the social institution and other organized groups in society.  In general, sociology studies various social problems the behavior of the individual groups, their cross-cultural relation to each in their daily interaction in their respective lives, and their related ethical issues.  Application of the sociology appears to apply in every respect, for instance, as portrayed in various movies. One of the movie series that typically mirrors and illustrates the social standings is the  “Prison Break.” Like any other movie about colonialism and slavery, this movie explains what prison life is like through the experiences of Michael cornfield who is the main character, Lincoln brother to Michael, T back, Sucre who is room to Michael, Be lick who is the prison warder, Twinned, Purse and Sarah.  This series revolves around one character that is Michael Cornfield, the conflict occurring in this series is that Lincoln, who is the brother to Michael, is imprisoned after he was accused of crime and murder.  His brother is a structural engineer who happens to be working in an industrial company. This movie is a typical example of what most societies go through, especially in a world where people will do anything to secure their destiny.

Section 2:Analysis

The following constitutes the definition and illustration of the social concepts from the movie.

  1. Concept: Aggregate
  2. Definition:This is a collection of unrelated people who don’t know each other, but they may occupy the same place.
  3. Illustration; Michael and his escape team donor know each other, but they are in the same prison but are all arrested in the same prison.
  4. Concept: Alienation
  5. Definition: This is a separation of the individuals from themselves and others.
  6. Illustration: Immediately after the escape, everybody decides to go his/ her ways abandoning the group unity led  Twinner and Sucre, who chooses to alienate themselves from the team. T- Back separates from the family due to government scrutiny.
  7. Concept: Commitment
  8. Definition: This is the willingness of members of the group to do what is needed to maintain the group.
  9. Illustration: The escape team maintains a lot of loyalty, keeps their secrets intact, and committed to the course. Michael and Sucre keep their dreams and secret intact, thus making sure the warder doesn’t discover the survey of the Michael inside the prison.
  10. Concept:Cooperation-
  11. Definition: A form of social interaction which involves the collaborative effort among people to achieve the common goal.
  12. Illustration; the escape team cooperates like digging tunnels in which act like their way out.
  13. Concept: Crime
  14. Definition: Actions that are against societal norms and are deemed to affect others negatively.
  15. Illustration: The prisoners found themselves behind bars because of their criminal actions.
  16. Concept: Domination
  17. Definition: The idea of one individual or group of individuals feeling superior over other people due to factors such as social status or race
  18. Illustration: Michael dominates and feels superior while controlling the escape team, which is gunning for its escape out of prison.

  2. Definition: Destructive and sometime may cause a collective outburst.
  3. Illustrative-other prisoner desired to riot after the escape team finds their way out of the prison.
  4. Concept: Scapegoating
  5. Definition: The act of blaming a convenient but innocent person for one’s trouble for guilt.
  6. Illustration- Lincon was scapegoat before arrested as he was commanded to kill somebody who had been already destroyed.
  7. Concept: Family ties
  8. Definition: People bond by blood and historical lineage.
  9. Illustration; Lincoln and Michael are siblings.
  10. Concept: Coercion
  11. Definition: A form of social interaction in which one is made to do something through the use of social threats.
  12. Illustration: Lincoln is coerced to kill the dead person, Michael also is coerced by his escape team to made faster plans in escape by T – Back.
  13. Concept: Deskilling
  14. Definition: The process of breaking down jobs into less complex segments that require less knowledge and judgment from the workers.
  15. Illustration: Michael breaks downs task to his escape mates while he is taking the complex task in drawing the way out plan. While his members are digging the tunnels.

12.Concept: Dysfunction

  1. Definition: Any consequences that disturb the social system or hinders the integration, adjustment, or stability of the system.
  2. Illustration-the power enforced by the administration of the prison hindered the process of breaking out of the jail by the escape team.
  3. Concept: Expressive leadership
  4. Definition: A natural skill to organize and lead with openness and courage
  5. Illustration: Michael is the expressive leader of the escape team as he makes sure the team remains as it should be to faceplate the easy way out.
  6. Concept: Authority
  7. Definition: The power that is regarded as legitimate in any organization or an institution.
  8. Illustration: be Lick represents the able authority of the prison where the escape team is kept; they take care of the prisoners and enforces the rules of the prison.
  9. Concept: Formal organization
  10. Definition:Highly structured groups with specific objectives, rules, and regulations.
  11. Illustration: There is evidence of a formal structure and way of doing things in the prison where the prisoners are held as there is a routine way of doing things
  12. Concept: Group-thinking
  13. Definition: The tendency of the people, especially groups, to follow the ideas and actions of the group.
  14. Illustration-the escape team had to follow and abide by the ideas given by their leader for the successfulness of the plan.
  15. Concept: Negative sanction
  16. Definition: Actions intended to punish unwanted social behaviors.
  17. Illustration- prison is where there is the sanction of negative social behavior as in this case of prison break like the case of murder.
  18. Concept: Panic
  19. Definition: A frightened response by an aggregate of people or persons to an immediate threat.
  20. Illustration- Sucre was panic when Michael left him alone during the night on his time, so surveillance and determining of the way out the tunnel.

19.Concept Occupation

  1. Definition: A job or a profession done by somebody.
  2. Illustration- Sarah acts as a doctor who takes care of the prisoner’s health like instances where he treats, Michael, who has diabetes.

20.Concept: Technology

  1. Definition: Practical application of scientific knowledge
  2. Illustration: the escape team used the technology in breaking the window that is using the lift to pull out it so that they can use it to get out of the prison.

Section 3:Reflection

The movie appears different when viewed like this in the sense that we can be able to find we be able to find various finer details that are deep understanding about how to flow from the start to the end.  With the oboe concepts in mind, we have something to tell. Various characteristics of the caters and the actresses can be mastered and determined by having a firm grip on those ideas and concepts. At some instances, the movies change its test depending on the mode of watching by the different individual that is everybody learns and takes his or her various lesson depending on concepts of sociology that one have.

Watching movies with certain concepts in mind changes our attitude towards various films and therefore being in a position to apply this knowledge practically in society. Mastering of characters becomes an easy task by different sociological concepts rather than watching the crudely or barely. The stated ideas can answer various questions that people usually ask themselves in the process of watching the movies, thus broadening the minds and eventually increasing the interest in the film.

The most exciting thing that I have learned this semester is about thinking like sociologist, concept helps me to read and study in any field such as sports and school, court and other areas in the sense that it opens one ‘s mindset to studying many things. My mode of watching movies has also changed due to the study of sociology concepts. This unit has dramatically broadened and raises my mind to another level.
