The Pissy Problem
Bedwetting is a problem in which the child urinates while sleeping in bed. This issue becomes a significant problem after the child becomes seven years old. Frequent bedwetting shows that the child is unable to control his bladder.
However, the parents should help the child bring this under control. They should understand that bedwetting may become an embarrassing problem when the child has sleepovers with friends or relatives. Scolding or emotional blackmailing is of no help in such scenarios.
So, it is up to the parents to tackle this issue and help the child overcome this problem.
To begin with, the parents should ensure that the child has more water during the daytime, but less water at night.
The child should not have any food or drinks which irritate the bladder such as chocolate milk or cocoa, dyed food (especially red), artificial sweeteners, and flavorings. The parents should check whether the child is sneaking snacks to bed with them. It doesn’t make sense for the parents to put in a lot of effort to curb bedwetting when the child has irregular food habits. Don't use plagiarised sources.Get your custom essay just from $11/page
If the school allows, the parents should give a water bottle to the child. Thus, she can ensure that the water intake of the child will remain uniform throughout the day. In that case, the child will be less likely to feel thirsty at night and wet the bed while sleeping.
Some parents wake their children up at random late at night and ask them to urinate. This step is not the solution because the child will end up feeling more tired and confused. This rigidity may also make the child so nervous that he may unconsciously wet the bed.
The parents should ensure that the child goes to bed early. This step includes cutting down their time to watch television. On the other hand, this habit helps the mind of the child to slow down, which helps him sleep more peacefully.
Also, the parents should set up a regular urination schedule for their child. Ideally, the children should visit the toilet every two to three hours throughout the day and just before bedtime.
Every time the child makes some progress, the parents should make it a point to praise him and congratulate him on the progress which he is making.
Medication is not the solution to this problem.
It is a good idea to check out whether the child is bedwetting as a result of constipation. The rectum is just behind the bladder. Thus, the problems related to illness might affect the bladder, especially at night.
Psychiatrists say that it is essential to talk to the child in this matter and motivate him to overcome this problem. The child has to realize that bedwetting may be a severe embarrassment to him in the future. So, he has to be motivated to overcome this. Otherwise, the efforts of the parents will go in vain.
However, parents need to monitor bedwetting very carefully because this might signal something serious like a urinary tract infection.
To conclude, the doctor should also find out whether the child realizes how embarrassing bedwetting is for him. This communication between the doctor and the patient is essential because the child may be unconsciously urinating in bed due to some tension like frequent arguments between his parents or some issues at home.
