Formation of Alps Ranges
The Alps is the most significant and most massive mountain range both in height and width occupying Europe and many other Alpine nations exemplified by Italy, Germany, Monaco, France, and others. The Ranges emerged through the process called Alpine orogeny, which happened more than 300 million years ago (Fitzsimons & Veit, 2001). According to experts, one tectonic plate divided into two plates during the Mesozoic period, thus leading to the development of Tethys sea between Gondwana and Laurasia within the Jurassic era. In the later years, the interacting plates squeezed Tethys, thus leading to the emergence of ranges commonly called the Alpine belt. Thus feature extends from Gilgraltar via the Himalayas through Indonesia. The formation of the Alps ranges began during the end of the Mesozoic era. The segmentation of Alp mountains happened through orogenic activities involving the collision of Eurasia and African plates, thus its extensive nature.
The severe compression forces lead to the uplifting of the marine sedimentary rocks hence creating the patterns of recumbent folds called nappes as well as the thrust faults. Erosion of the rising peaks led to the deposition of the marine flysch sediments within the foreland basin as the foreland regions, as exemplified by molasse, received sediments continuously uplifting and eroded materials (Fitzsimons & Veit, 2001). At the same time, the well-established areas such as molasse in Bavaria and Switzerland experienced additional upthrusting of flysch.
In conclusion, the process of orogeny emerged in cycles via the Paleogene hence leading to varied nappe structures due to delayed formations. As a result, it contributed to the creation of Mount Jura, which led to varied paleogeography sections. This situation contributed to the scenario whereby various parts of Alps form under the influence of diverse rock components as well as the nappe structures based on the formation process (Fitzsimons & Veit, 2001). This scenario explains why there is the Southern and Eastern Alps, namely Periadriatic seam, Helveticum, Austroalpine, and Pennicicum.
