An essay on expectations
Expectations are a word used to explain the ability of someone to believe that something will happen in a given way. It is the anticipation of an activity or event to take place within the environs of any human being. It can also be explained as the strong beliefs or hopes of the occurrence of an event or getting in possession of the desired deed.
The achievement of success is dependent on the ability of an individual to visualize being in a strong position. For instance, elite athletes rehearse the performances before the time of execution arrives that is mentally and physically. The study in neuroscience gives the reasons as to why building an atmosphere of anticipation because the neurological procedures involved in developing concepts of the future performances are closely related to the actual actions that will be done towards that event. Visualization of success and accompanying it with the belief that success possibly occurs as a precondition of many forms of achievements by humans. Moreover, it is also clear that the views and attitudes of others highly influence the development of self-efficacy. In the case of schools, achieving high grades is correlated to the cultural and parental expectations that a child is set for. Parents are potent fixers of aspirations and values of children. Moreover, even teachers are part and parcel of the influencers that communicate beliefs to students and build the student’s self confidence by setting high expectations.
Nevertheless, the way a lot of people live up to high expectations so are others who live up to low expectations. Expectations cannot entirely be on the upside of it as some other people do not expect the very best for themselves. Some people do not see any good or better deed generating out of some individual’s anticipation. This is because different students have different beliefs, and they can be changed in the long run but cannot be reinforced to adopt a new target or goal unless one is willing to take that particular path. Some students seem to see the ability as fixed, and it is something that they little control over. Those that believe they have a low level of fixed skills end up thinking that enacting efforts does not make any differences in the anticipated outcomes, while those considered having high abilities degrade the importance of inputting effort. However, students who believe in having an increase in their ability levels have a profound connotation that effort and success are directly proportional. They describe failure as a lack of effort rather than interpreting it as a lack of ability. Cultural differences in beliefs have been proven by research to withhold that different people from different cultures exploit different opinions (Hunter, 2017).
People set their expectations according to different reasons. Each person hopes regardless of the area of origin and concentration, have a beneficial factor to it that can be attained if implemented as planned. But for an individual to set targets for a given task or duty to fulfill, they are guided by the belief that they need to partake a particular decision making criteria and analogy to meet the goals. And fortunately or unfortunately, it is unavoidable for every individual to get away from having expectations in life. Therefore, to understand why people set these targets, here are a few reasons as to why they are of significance to the attainment of objectives of a person.
First and foremost, setting expectations motivates the individual to have a purpose in life. It acts as a guideline to achieving goals that the individual anticipates to have at a particular point in time. It also provides clarity to you as a person and the people surrounding you to understand what is needed to be done to arrive at a given destination. The baseline measurements for the performance metrics of the future of an individual are established when expectations are set. More so, it propels the communication to everyone what a person desires to have at the end of implementing a plan or strategy. Lastly, they set a reference point when people do not meet targets and goals within any organizational setup. Many organizations set the levels of expectations that they expect through the setting of goals and objectives for a given purpose or decisions made by management.
The establishment of expectations is essential in demonstrating the clarity of people’s wants and the methodology of arriving at the desired destination. Personal targets have no limitations, and the outcomes are detectable, and any changes in the strategies set can be shifted at any single time to fit into the desirer’s manuscript. This is one of the reasons why expectations are essential. To know the deviations that occurs for an objective or expected result from an individual. For clarity of the need to have expectations in place, some benefits that drive the urgency to meet goals are discussed below. But they only elaborate on the importance of having high expectations in place rather than the other side of the coin.
Perceived failure or success of any project or program or even other operation functions rely on the ability of people to the project and their anticipations from it. It is not necessary to achieve every goal for a decision or plan/project to be considered a success. Therefore, setting high goals is only a motivator to guide in attaining more top achievements. This tests the potentiality of an individual but can only be verified through this. Moreover, high expectations help people in the development of personal hidden abilities and skills and ensure the credibility of moving towards a specific direction. In understanding the importance of discovering these elements, every person needs to balance between reality and personal expectations to avoid going overboard on anticipations. High expectations also motivate and boost the productivity of other people. Individuals who expect more than the standard must be a point of reference for people that surround them. It is unnecessary to motivate others only through words with very minimal actions attached to it. Lastly, expectations also help in reducing the inferiority complex in people and improve their self-esteem. A balance between reality and the expected outcomes aids a person in developing self-esteem and confidence.
There are downsides of high expectations established since nothing good comes on a silver platter. High expectations can cause disappointment, psychological problems, and stress if they are not achieved. Hence, as much as there is the need to make more, pressurizing oneself to arrive at decisions and destinations may not be profitable to any person. This is because too high expectations require significant responsibilities assigned to it, and the skills necessary to achieve it need to be psychologically, mentally, and physically prepared. This can aggravate the inferiority complex and discourage people from discovering their full potentiality.
Moreover, it can result to humiliation, irritation and spoil the relationship that one has with other people due to being devastated for minimal or no attainment of the goals or targets. Also, it can lead to the deprivation of an individual’s enthusiasm and motivation. Cumbersome and overstraining supervision cannot be tolerated by passion and motivation. Striking the downside of a target or expectation makes a person lose the craving to go further with the tasks and activities set.
Generally, expectations shape how the reality of an individual can or may look like. The way people think, behave, and their emotions to are all intertwined when this context becomes a topic. These three components foster the impact that an expected output will have on an individual. However, very few people understand the complexity of setting expectations, which can positively and negatively influence the product of it. Therefore, it is essential to comprehend the effects that expectations can have on people, whether positive or negative.
The positive effects of expecting are that it sometimes helps someone to fulfill their prophecies. Having consistent beliefs about a feature in oneself evokes the initial point of view. This always happens in many social institutions. The impact of developing expectations results in shaping the behavior and abilities that a man can have both for himself and the general public at large. The focus to attain what you anticipate molds you to develop a character from the behavioral perspective gotten from the derivation of expectations set.
The negativity in it is that when expectations are held, you have a belief of something that is non-existent and has a 50% chance of being achieved. Trust, time and even sometimes money is invested in a blind outcome that has unpredicted results. Moreover, little or no achievement of a goal or an expected outcome from set targets can hurt and demotivate an individual is partaking in any other activity or further involvement.
In conclusion, setting expectations is the first step to achieving glory for an individual. A person is who does not have expectations is abnormal. Every person has to anticipate something at one stage of their lifetime. Hence, not having a fulfilled expectation should not be a hindrance to setting more targets and striving to achieve them. For a single failure should instead motivate you as an individual to go after more than giving up. This is because the power to determine one’s potentialities is measured by their capability of going beyond what withholds them from taking further steps.
