Bitter melon film
Introduction
Asian American films are experimental. They concentrate on a different aspect rather than that of mainstream Hollywood films. These films go-ahead to challenge stereotypes mostly by putting the main character in strange situations. In this paper, I chose bitter melon film to show how different it is to mainstream of Hollywood films and how similar it is to Chan is missing.
Bitter melon film
I choose the Bitter Melon film since it is a realistic representation of the way men treat women. The video is taken at home, explaining how masculinity is viewed in households and communities. As Declan returns to his hometown to celebrate Christmas, he realizes that Troy, his second eldest brother, has been mistreating the others, making them live in fear in the house.
He has been physically abusing his wife and more so abusing his mother and daughter emotionally. Amazingly, everyone acts as if nothing happened even when sally is nursing her face that is bruised. These actions annoy Declan so much to the extent of proposing that they should kill troy. This film is a clear depiction of how the men mistreat the women, and they can do nothing about it. It is a stereotype that tries to take men as being superior to women. The movie puts the women characters in a difficult situation where men are assaulting them.
Conclusion
In summary, this film is different from Hollywood mainstreaming since it is not meant to make huge profits. The film has a central theme of enlightening society on issues faced by women in the hands of the men. The film leaves a lot of lessons, even with is simplicity. Hollywood mainstreaming films are made with many costs to make a profit. The Bitter Melon film is formed as pure art and not profit-making like those of Hollywood. The Bitter Melon film is similar to the film Chan is missing since the other film shows the challenges of Asian Americans, especially the Chinese. It shows the complicated portrait of Chinese Americans people.
